The Penguins defense is known to buckle when under pressure, but they have Wonder Sid and the offense to compensate. The Leafs defensive coverage is equally vulnerable and ugly to watch when under pressure, but they don't have Wonder Sid or the offense to compensate.
When John F signed McCabe and Kabina for a total of over $10 million he had the right idea, conceptually anyway, that Leafs must play strong defensive hockey to be successful. The problem is neither is delivering to close to their fat salaries. Both should go in the ideal world.
Unfortunately, neither is likely to go as no team management would be as stupid as John F. To salvage his own blunders, he spent another $4 million or so + some 1st round drafts to get Toskala. But there is only so much a goalie can do.
So Leaf fans, of whom I'm one - we are stuck and our options are very limited. I'll attempt trading both McCabe and Kabina and hope for a taker - not likely. Failing this, I'll play either or both as a winger on the checking line, taking advantage of McCabe's powerful shot and both's sizes. I'll replace them with the younger prospects in the farm team, which Leafs have ample.
I don't know. The Leafs are in a bind. All I know is given the current roster and utilizing it the way it is, we are going nowhere. We have 2 choices: status quo and going nowhere; or be bold and innovative hoping that it would go somewhere.
