Truth be told, most of these jobs are already done by part-timers and immigrants.
Most Canadian (Loblaws, Metro Sobey's and affliliated brands) grocery stores are unionized; the US chains operating in Canada (Walmart, Costco), are not.

Costco pays and treats its workers very well. I have seen employees at my Costco for 20 years. That tells ya something. Unions are obsolete and irritating to the public.

Costco should change their business model and open up some grocery stores .

Could it mean that they have no better place to go, and the stores have no applicants to replace them?

During the start of the pandemic the grocery stores were limiting the number of people entering. There were two grocery stores that I was going to ( one Loblaw and the other a Loblaw affiliate store ). They had Nazi tyrants directing and limiting entry of people into the store. These two loudly barked out orders to people in line as if they were in a Schindler's List WWII film scene where prisoners were arriving at a train station. On the next occasions I went to the store these two were bowing and scraping and quietly asking people to use the hand sanitizer and keep their distance. Maybe after I told Galen he went down and shoved a hot President's Choice humble pie up they arse holes. The guy was probably threatened to be sent back to lift boxes in the vegetable/fruit department and the woman would be sent back to the check out counter. These two were still retained after such horrific tyrannical behavior.

Don’t have a problem with private unions. If their demands are too high, eventually the stores will close. No differently than many others in automotive. Unions do, “fight” for more than just wages. Workplace safety, benefits and more. Consider, these are low income earners, a good bet many don’t get 40 hrs a week and aren’t full time. Presently they will be trying to live on crumbs….kind of tells us, they believe it’s worth it….and statistically speaking wages have been stagnant ( relative to inflation) for decades.

Also keep in mind, more and more seniors are returning to the workforce. It’s unlikely they are getting jobs as high flying desk jockeys…aka they are taking these kinds of jobs

At a SP near me
Wasn’t it Miracle Food Mart where they had a 14 week strike then went bankrupt afterwards in the 1990s? Seems during this period, consumers switched brands and never went back so whatever concessions the workers gained didn’t matter as they were all out of a job.

If your employees cannot afford to live their lives while working full time then your business doesn't deserve to survive.

Metro's profit margin went UP since before the pandemic.
Metro's executive pay went UP last year
And yet people can't afford homes or food.

If Metro says they can't afford to raise worker pay, they should try to explain how that's possible when revenue, profit, and executive bonuses are all up.

I would like to know what was in the offer the Union executive recommended they take.

Is it true that other unions are allowed to provide financial and physical support to the strikers?

Metro staff are treated well too...but it takes a few nudge from someone who wants money to snowball this into a strike...

No. Immigrants should take up high paying white collar jobs.

Of course, am sure for you, if they took up low paying blue collar jobs that would make you feel very good, because you can then lord over them as lowly paid laborers. 🤣
Nothing wrong with taking jobs like metro or sobeys when you're a newly landed immigrant...or you just turned 16...this is a good gig and metro pays above minimum once you get the hang of it...this could be the "Canadian experience" one can put in their resume as they move up in the world...

Agree. Don't understand why that other poster has a chip on his shoulder.

I've not even an immigrant and I've worked as a busboy, food deliverer, etc.

I met a cashier at one of the chain grocery stores who didn't speak any English. Everybody has to start somewhere unless you were born into a rich family.

I know a great guy who started off with Loblaws at 16 pushing buggies. Went on to manage most departments, then store manager in several locations and eventually became a district manager, great pay, perks and pension. It can be done.
