If it can be purchased here in the peoples republic I will try. Our government prides itself on protecting members of the public from the rigours of competition and freedom of choice.

I just went to the Web sites for our LCBO and Brewers retail, it is not sold here, big surprise, so I may have to take you up on the offer. It would be scary to bring Esco, he might drink it all.

Canada should open its doors wide wide wide open to dirt poor, starving, desperate for citizenship, brown-skinned, black-haired, Selma-Hayek-esque mexican babes named Consuela and Maria and Ines. They can clean my kitchen, scrub my floors, then, well, I'm too polite to say exactly how I would abuse my relative wealth, but presumably you get the idea.

When people came to America from Europe centuries ago they took the land from the Natives. Many did not just want to conquer new lands but they wanted to live in a place where there existed freedom and they could live their dreams. They were in the same situation as the illegal immigrants from today. Why were they allowed to stay then? Now they made a land that does not belong to them their own and want to keep illegal immigrants from living the same dream that their ancestors wanted to live centuries ago.

My people, your people are not any different. They fight for food and a decent treatment.

There are two possible responses when challenged. Fight or Flight. If you sneak across the border from a broken country to a well run country that's flight. If you were really hard working you would stay and fix the broken one. It's also easier to fight the batlle in the US since Idealistically they are not hitting back yet. if they were hitting back they would have had the INS arrest and deport all the Illegals at the protest. listening to Illegals demand treatment that the US is not obligated to provide is like finding a squater in your living room when you come home from work and he has the gaul to complain about the brand of beer you keep in your fridge. Actually the way the illegals are treated in the states is kind of like the way Jerry Seinfeld put up with Kramer The freeloading neighbor. If you want to participate in US society all you have to do is Apply and Immigrate legally. I don't think anyone has a problem with that form of entry into the country. There also has to be a willingness to participate in the society by Learning the language, Obeying the law, Paying Taxes.

Unfortunately I couldn't find one, I think this is a business opportunity for someone. There is a massive silent majority down here that is a bit perplexed how a bunch of people here illegally have the gall to protest, not many countries would resist the opportunity to send in the law enforcement. I've heard more than one person say that they would not do business with firm that was closed yesterday, I didn't see a single sign of this brew ha ha (other than on the news) so I can't comment.

You are joking right. There is no similarity at all between the European conquest of North America and the illegal immigrants sneaking into the US.

There was an article in the paper the other day on the size of the underground economy in Canada and other OECD coutries. As a percentage of GDP our is running at about twice the US rate.

Substituting Canadian (or even Ontario) for US, burlboy's comments echo the debate over the illegal construction workers, particularly in Ontario. Problem with that one is contractors obviously knew they where hiring illegals. So where was the paperwork for taxes, health coverage, and -- God forbid -- health and retirement benefits?

Seems like the underground economy was not that far underground. In fact, a cynic might believe employers were using the status if these workers to their own end$$.
One of the best arguments for a guest worker program is it brings these employees above ground and reduces the likelihood of them being exploited by employers not following the rules.

I know in the Toronto Realestate market new condos require more skilled labour. Multioccupancy buildings are more complex and, construction mistakes have a much larger impact from a safety point of view, both for the workers during construction and for the owners after construction. The Occupational Health & safety Inspectors have been shutting down sites or sending workers home if they do not have the appropriate health & safety and construction training for the job site. More and more the low skilled and low tech labourers are becoming obsolete. You need training to do your job and you need to understand the language to take the training courses to maintain your status.

And coming above ground might also encourage them to learn the language. During the great illegal construction worker debate a few weeks back one of the affected workers had to speak through an interpreter. And he'd been here more than a decade!!!
I know a guy who came here after WW2 as a kid but he worked in construction all his life and he can barely speak any English at all.

My first boss in Toronto was a great guy and spoke excellent English. I get this call one day from a lady that could not speak English, except to say
"speak Fulvio please" .I think that he was born in Toronto, and his parents had been in the country for over 45 years. I was kind of in shock....

Spanish is the unofficial second language of America. The shear number of millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, make it so. Learning English is by no means an absolute necessity to find well paying work in this country, least of all in construction. On a daily basis in the course of my business, I come across workers in many trades who can barely communicate in English, and still perform their job. What their legal status is, or how well they have been trained, I could only guess.
