Exactly
Douglas has been smoking for 40 or 50 years.
Smokers are usually in denial. All of their smoking ailments are not caused by smoking, but something else.
Like Eddie Van Halen. I think he had some sort of oral cancer as well too, but blamed it on holding metal guitar picks in his mouth, not the two decks of smokes he consumed every day.
Years ago, I was involved with a project where there was found to be high levels of PCBs in the soil (former General Electric Transformer plant at Lansdowne and Dupont in Toronto. The entire corner (now being sold off as condos by the way!!) was a toxic soup in the soil of PCBs. The construction workers had to be told of the PCB contamination and they all FREAKED out like it was going to be the death of them. (The truth was that PCBs are a type of oil that you would have to eat or roll around naked in the soil, or drink contaminated water for them to affect you.) All of these guys were Portuguese labourers and every last one them smoked like a chimney. I said to the one guy that I'd be more worried about the cigarettes he and his friends were constantly burning than anything to do with the PCB contamination in the soil. This only made him more angry and he insisted that smoking wouldn't touch him, but the PCBs could kill him. Classic.
