I think this could be viewed as more specific to South Asian culture than to the Muslim religion, just as the "honour killings" of women in Arab countries, or female "circumcision" need to be associated not with Islam per se but with certain cultures whose traditions are now mediated through Islam.

What I mean is, don't blame Islam! Blame asshole abusers!

That said, you can't ignore the fact that a lot of this violence happens in various societies where Islam predominates.

If this was truly a Muslim problem, we would have almost daily stories about Muslim women being killed, stoned, honour killings, blood killings etc etc etc. Take a look at Saudi Arabia, and how rape is perceived.

Is this behaviour limited only to Muslim's? I think not.

Jonestown comes to mind. The Crusades. The Children's crusade. The Spanish Inquisition. Or how about Vietnam, where the US went to war over the idea of The Domino Effect (ie over ideology). Or the wars in the Middle East today, which George Bush has characterized as Crusades.

I'm assuming the father will do his time here in Canada. I trust our system for the most part. What bothers me is that there are Islamic states in other places in the world where this is an acceptable practice... killing your daughter because she shames the family... and the father/brother is held up within the community as having done the right thing. So who knows how many women are killed each day/week/month/year in the name of saving the family's good name.

Asqa Parvez, the 16-year-old allegedly strangled by her father, has died of her injuries.

A man telephoned Peel Regional Police at 7:55 a.m. yesterday claiming he had killed his daughter.

When police arrived at the posh Longhorn Trail home, where about a dozen people spanning three generations live, Aqsa was barely alive.

She was transported to Sick Kids hospital, where she later died.

Aqsa's father, Muhammad Parvez, 57, has been charged with murder. He made a brief court appearance this morning and was remanded in custody pending another court appearance Wednesday.

The teen's brother - Waqas Parvez, 26 - has been charged with obstructing justice.
