Youssouf Fofana - who admits kidnapping 23-year-old Ilan Halimi but denies killing him - shouted "God is great" in Arabic as he entered the courtroom.

Some 26 of his alleged associates are also on trial for lesser offences.

The trial, due to last until July, will be held behind closed doors because of the young age of two of the defendants.

The killing prompted thousands of people to take to the streets of Paris and protest against anti-Semitism.

Mr Halimi was kidnapped and brutally tortured for more than three weeks before he was found naked and tied to a tree near a railway track in the southern suburbs of Paris.

He had been stabbed and set alight and died on his way to hospital.

Mr Fofana, 28, leader of a Paris gang known as The Barbarians, is accused of carrying out the attack and faces life imprisonment if found guilty.

He entered the court wearing a white tracksuit and looked at Mr Halimi's relatives before shouting "Allahu akbar".

When the judge asked the defendant for his identity, he replied "African barbarian armed revolt salafist", referring to a strict Sunni Muslim movement.

He the told the court he was born on 13 February, 2006, in Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois - the date and place of Mr Halimi's death.



Youssouf Fofana has pleaded not guilty to murder
Mr Fofana is alleged to have ordered gang members to kidnap Jews and hold them until their families paid a ransom.

The victim, who worked in a mobile phone shop, was lured by a female gang member to an empty apartment in the Parisian suburbs where he was attacked and drugged.

The kidnappers tried unsuccessfully to extort a ransom of 450,000 euros ($600,000; £405,000) from his family.

During his ordeal, his family was sent harrowing images and video recordings by his captors.

Jacques Chirac, who was president at the time, promised his parents a full investigation.

Mr Fofana, of Ivorian descent, fled to Ivory Coast after the murder and allegedly made death threats over the telephone Mr Halimi's father and girlfriend.

He was extradited back to France in March 2006.

Why is there never any condemnation of these atrocities from Muslim authority figures or the greater community at large? The silence is deafening. One can reasonably conclude that these acts are largely condoned.

Religion is irrational and poison. I must admit that whenever I'm walking downtown and sweating in the summer heat, and I see Muslim women covered from head to toe in garb, I'm instantly reminded about the idioticy of religious practices. If you take a moment to think about it, it's absolutely fascinating - that while living in the 1st world in the 21st century with all the freedoms and technology at hand, people still voluntarily adhere to irrational 1000 year old fairy tales. It makes sense because they're recent imports from overseas but the dynamic is incredible if you ever take the time to think it over. It's as close as you can get to using a timemachine to transplant somebody from a thousand years ago into modern society.

I feel similarly whenever I walk past any of the countless Christian churches that line the city streets, but it's less of an issue since Christians have more or less evolved (after decades of kicking and screaming).

Attacking soo much that people with BROKEN BONES had to wait up to 48 hours to be looked up because there was no space in hospitals and no supplies to treat them. People with brain or internal injuries were being look after more.

I believe you'll discover that many Cambodians who participated in the killing and tortures of the Khmer Rouge era were also Bhuddists.

And do check out the history of India. Lots of gory stuff about Hindu atrocities, especially during Partition—which was all religious killing and violence.

Organised Religions are a bad thing. I'm an Agnostic so I don't have time for any religion. What really annoys me about Muslims is that are openly hostile towards Jewish people. But when anybody says anything about them, they cry about religious persecution and scream for blood. they are the biggest hipocrits around. And for anyone who claims not all Muslims are like that, any Muslim who stay silent when somone uses their Religion to commit acts of hate, you are just as guilty as the perpatrators. Could not have said it better myself. This cannot be compared to Guantanimo Bay or Israel's attack on Palestine. These are misguided in their own right but at least motivated by profound acts of war or performed on or in retaliation to a perceived enemy.

Extreme Islamic mental patients are running around lookingfor the most unsuspecting victims. Store owners. Teachers. Their own wives children and mothers. These unmotivated murders are performed by animals and monsters. Every last one.

How do you know it hasnt? Dont we all know by now you only hear bad things from the news.
There is tons of people who didnt grow up in a religious family but only to get into religion due to some circumstances in their life where they are looking to better themselves, use as motivation or whatever the cause may be.
Is the is the first religion related incident that has happened?
I'm kinda surprised at some here.
