So, I want to get an inexpensive cellphone - pay as you go or phone card type of deal & I want coverage in the States too. I don't want to sign any contracts. I also don't want to pay for minutes that I have to use. I don't know the first thing about plans. Anyone got any advice?

apparently the SpeakOut phone will call TO the US. For in the US, get a cheapo there from Wallmart.

If you get an unlocked GSM phone you can drop a SIM card in from any carrier, just get a local SIM card and some minuets and away you go, anywhere in the world.

T-mobile SIMs are $100 for 1100 minutes anywhere in the US. Worth the drive to the border. The minutes take a year to expire, not 30 days for PAYG as in Canada.

Right...Speakout uses GSM phones and piggybacks the rogers network. As dummpy siggested when you go to the states, just get a local SIM and buy some minutes.

Good tips so far. Thanks.

If i take a SpeakOut phone to Europe, can I buy a sim there and use it while I'm on the continent? Thanks.

Some of these phones are locked to the carrier and will not accept another brand of SIM, there are local shops that will unlock the phone for around $60 or just buy one for $40-50 unlocked and then get the appropriate SIM's quad band is really only an issue if you are going to Africa or South America, the tri band ones (very very common) are good in Europe and north America and most of Asia. I have found great deals on unlocked GSM phones at tigerdirect dot ca. Or you can look at the local cell phone repair places, they usually have referbs.
