No way in hell would I ever check my electronics with the airline... as i've stated before there are WAY to many times that i've shown up at my final destination WITHOUT my luggage.
That's right! I totally agree with this. It is another form of terrorism that the airlines and governments do nothing about. Instead they focus on the passengers as criminals rather than looking at their own interior. Hell, one of these pig terrorists worked at Heathrow. Gee, some background check.

Theft, robbery, racism and Rush Limbhaugh intimidation are also forms of terrorism. They are fascists just like the terrorists trying to ruin the way we live recruiting idiots of poverty. Governments without ways to monitor liquids when they knew this for decades is another form of terrorism onto law abiding everyday living civilians. You'd expect they'd have the equipemnt in place immediately, rather than checking if girls can squirt or if a man's testicle is bigger than his other at airport security.

And George W. Bush Jr. is the main reason for this increase in terrorism with his bogus push for grabbing oil for his friends. He must be impeached, so a more intellegent way to solving the problem is achieved rather than Bush Jr. pushing it for paychecks. His approach: we are Earth, they are Mars. Impeach this guy and remove all Republicans, including the krypto variety this November so there can be hearings and the truth comes out.

The New York Post (a Republican slanted newspaper) printed a story against the Bush Jr. Administration today that there are more terrorist camps at the Pakistan/Afghanistan border. Open air camps. Not as if George W. Bush Jr. and his token force is out to wipe it clean. He wants them there. That's why there's secrecy! How else to hide the fact he is a failure and someone else, outside the Bush Jr. Incorporated camp and the Republicans are keeping the world safe! It's Labour, Liberals, Democrats, Truth and common sense! There is a better way. The world according to Bush Jr. is dehydration for all (like Katrina) and tooth decay.

IMPEACH!!!!!!!!! IMPEACH!!!!!!!!!!! IMPEACH!!!!!!!!!

by the way, you never answered my question: if they DO allow you to keep your ipod, and some radical blows up a plane with one, how will you feel?
I feel exactly like when I hear a soldier that got killed in a war. Sad, angry, but it's part of the risk that a soldier should ready to face.

Give me an idea of what lens you're talking about and I bet I could find an outlet anywhere in the world in about 30 minutes....I've always gone to vistek and they have just about anything one would ever need including hasselblad digital and those bodies are 15 grand.....
Yeah, they rent it, but it's first come first serve, not like they have a bunhc of those lying around. There have been too many ocassions I can't rent a Canon 400 f/2.8L IS DO from them because they only have one or two in stock for rental, that's why I ended up buying it although it cost me around US$8k.
The same goes with their Hasselbald with 39MP digital back.

You can talk about them having those equipments, but when you really need them and they don't have it... then what? Lose my reputation?

oh that's right, you have no reputation to lose.

PS: the fact that you mention Hasselblad as if it's the holy grail of photography shows how little you know about photography.

Duty free liquor is a liquid. Ergo it is not allowed. I'm overseas right now, nowhere close to US / UK and the duty free shops here are not selling anything. For some reason they're still open but they won't sell you anything because they know damn well it's not allowed on board.

I'm with the rest of the biz travellers in this thread - I always carry my cellphone and except during flight, it's always on. No matter where and when I am, that phone is on so I can respond to whatever situation may come up. Checking the phone in the main luggage is no mere inconvenience to me - it's serious downtime.

The laptop is something I'd love to check in but when you're in the lounge waiting for the flight, sometimes (most times) the best thing to do is crack it open and work. Yes the lounges mostly have computers with internet access, but not all lounges everywhere in the world have them. Besides which, there's only one computer anywhere that has my files on it. Furthermore, if airlines make me check in my laptop, I want more than $200 insurance from them. Somehow, I don't think they'll go for that. Yet they won't let me carry it onboard? So what do we do now?

Fundamentally this is exactly what terrorists want - to change the world in ways that negatively affect people's day to day lives. What really strikes me as absurd this time though, is that the UK police caught the bad guys before they did anything. There was an alleged plot but it was disrupted before anything happened. So why all the fuss?

Perhaps the airlines should save themselves a shitload of trouble and just ban people from flying.

according Tboy, you don't need a laptop! so shut up and follow his logic! :p

I totally agree with you. Checking in my $3,000 laptop to be insured for $200. I can't even XP Professional Retail for that amount!

As I previously mentioned, even if there is ZERO electronics on the aircraft, not even AC outlet in the washroom, no lights whatsoever, and the aircraft is flown by the power of magic, all the terrorist need to do to detonate a bomb is to rub wool (or similar type of cloth) to create static electricity and kablamo!

Then what? the next thing you know everybody should be flying naked AND completely shaven, tied to the plastic chair so there can be no movement whatsoever to prevent static charges.

This is completely dumb.

aw come on! :p Tboy acted as he knows how to run MY business to the point mentioning that a Hassy costs $15k. Everybody in the business knows that a true Hassy with 39 MP digital back cost way more than that (US$40,000 to be exact, body only).

Also he didn't say anything about my 'trick' lens of Canon 400mm f/2.8L IS DO. There is no DO version of that lens.

they won't even allow contact solution. If your contacts act up and have to be cleaned then you might as well throww them out. I called air canada to see if they would have some on board and they do not.

LOL! In fact, I only use about 5 lenses and 2 bodies for all my pro shots.

lenses
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS
Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS
Canon 300 f/2.8L IS
Canon 400 f/2.8L IS
Canon 50mm f/1.8

bodies
Canon 30D x2
or
Canon 5D x2
or
Canon 1Ds MKII x2
or any combination thereof

for personal travels I just use Sigma 18-125 f/5.6 cheapo lens and a Canon 30D

I do, however, buy and sell lenses quite often (below 70mm focal length)

That is the very reason I don't wear contacts. I travel by air rather often and my optometrist told me that it's better to NOT wear contact lens while flying and wear regular glasses instead. So, as I am a truly cheap, I opt out from contact lens and just wear regular glasses wherever I go.

But for people who only travel every now and then (and not long hauls like I tend to do), this is silly. Are the airlines going to reimburse every single pairs of contacts you need to throw away just because they won't allow contact solution?

They can't have it both ways.

no contacts solution: at the same time they won't cover your replacement contacts costs

no electronics on board: at the same time they will only cover about $200 for the replacement of your laptop/iPod/camera/cellphone/PDA. Even if you buy the cheapest cellphone (full price, not those sign-up pricing) $200 won't cover most cellphones people use.

last but not least (but very OT), Air Canada have the balls to state that "in order to serve you better, we have now excluded meals from certain flights". That is a big "WTF?"

i always have plenty water with me as i get dehydrated very fast and i do drink lots of water regularly, esp going to other side of the world, my whole family always have water in bag to drink on the flight vs the little cups of water that they give you every so often, and keep asking them about it is just such bother.
seriously what is gonna be next, no shoes, no clothing?
I am sure that we all will concede -well, maybe not those who have experienced the tribulations of war, strife and cruelty -that while the situation you find so desperate may be the bread of adversity for you, perhaps you will draw comfort from the fact that it will also soothe you with the balm of the waters of affliction.

So you are saying that because a passenger wants to be able to fly, anyone that gets killed by a terrorist shouldn't complain because that is the risk a passenger should be ready to face?

I tell you what, the next time any family loses someone due to a terrorist you can be the one to tell them: sorry, but he/she/they knew the risks.....

I hope, no I PRAY that you are on the next plane that goes down...oh god how I want that......when that happens think to yourself: welp, that's the risk I took when I boarded the plane....and damn it's so nice to have my laptop next to me, my cellphone on my hip and damn it's nice being able to listen to my ip.....BOOM

BTW: you can get a hassy and a digital back for 18 grand at vistek, though it may not be the one you are referring to but that doesn't negate the fact that you can get one...

I didn't suppose it was the holy grail, I just gave it as an example of what can be rented....not just ROTM stuff....

But when I rent a Hassy it's always the HD2-39MS. That's just proof that I can't rent it there.

I think I am gonna quit my job and go work at the airport as a luggage *******... sounds like I should be able to "borrow" some sweet cameras and laptops!

Personally, I think all this security is bullshit. I do not mind going through it. However, the people running security at Pearson appear barely able to work at McDonalds. They do not appear to have a lot of intuition about people or knowledge about electronics. Add in the fact that the 9/11 terrorists used frickin box cutters, and I imagine the same thing can be done with high tech plastic. No matter how much security you have, there is always a way around it.

*edit* weird that the word "h a n d l e r" gets edited out above.

Yup, I gotta work there. Considering they are hiring ex-criminals (which includes ex-thieves), I would make better $$ from working there than being a web designer and a photographer.

I flew this morning

I couldn't buy any contained liquid (like a bottle of water) but there were water fountains and restaurants selling liquids in glasses past security.

Are empty plastic bottles prohibited? Can you then refill them past security then take them on the plane? There was no secondary baggage check at the gate.
