In a living hell
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this board is set up to place astericks if someone spells out a profane word.
But just curious, couple times I've posted in the SC section and made reference to points made by Dan****an, why does the program put an asterick in his name?

If you spell it out in two words the results are: Dancer Fan

Put it together and you get: Dan****an.

Trivial, I know. Some people have too much time on their hands!

Remember the spammers? They used a combination of C-E-R-F which, in a genius move by Fred, was added into the filter.

There's a couple of others as well. Like the middle of exac-erbate and looser minus an 'o'.

You learn to live with it and pretty soon you don't notice. Or you curse Fred to high heaven, whichever floats your boat.

I wonder if any of you understand that this word is often used in a derogatory and negative manner, as illustrated in the above quote.
You guys use it as a joke and make light of it, but some women do find it offensive. I don't think Sara is out of line thinking that this word should be filtered.
Aurora
Some men (myself included) also find it offensive.

This is kinda weird.

I don't like the word 'c u n t', in reference to the female genitalia. It just sounds too crass.

I had this bizarre argument with an ex gf. She thought that by my using the term "pussy", I was somehow being hypocritical and I should say "c u n t". I really don't see her point , other than she thought I was possibly trying to beautify something rather than "call a spade a spade" ...

FYI She was about 70% womens lib ( it's a continuum according to her, which I would agree ) and a philosophy major ( that may explain a lot )

The only time I use the word c u n t, is in anger / frustration which is rare, especially these days, and not male or female specific or even, in some instances, directed at any person in particular.

Interesting insight, Aurora. I will keep that in mind.

PS You have to admire my booty buddy for his honesty and obviously his intent is not to be derogatory. Toward females, at least.

Really Retired.....REALLY!
I'm sorry but when did the board audience get so young that it became a good idea to filter out such words?

We are all adults here and I am sure it is not going to hurt anyone to see the word c.unt or l.oser. I mean really, what is the difference between seeing the actual word or asterisks in place of the word? In the end it was still said.

While I find the use of the #unt word corse and objectionable, I find the idea of censorship over such a minor offense to be a far more dangerous and repugnant idea.

Getting rid of spam is one thing, getting rid of freedom of expression is quite another.
Bottom line is some people find the word objectionable and offensive. Noone is saying you should not use the word.
All we are saying is : try to be sensitive to how other people feel
and [ ... because some find the word to be coarse, objectionable and offensive] don't use the word here.

I am sure many other publications out there intended for adults would take the same line.

Censorship is almost inevitable when some individuals
don't care whether they offend anyone or not.

GTA (Gash, Tits, and Ass)
Expression=Good ... Censorship=Bad

If it helps reduce SPAM, I agree with blocking certain letter combinations.

However, I think it's foolish to "asterisk-out" words just because they have a negative or insulting meanings.

Expressing a negative sentiment is a part of free expression. Any word can be used to hurtful. If the speaker/writer wants to offend or insult, he or she will find a way to do it. Expressions like asshole/arsehole, dirtbag, molester, conservative, rapist, and thief are all negative terms used (almost) exclusively to pass negative judgement. Do we need to ban these too? Where would it end?

A review board has much legitimate use for negative, as well as positive expressions. What's more, the very basis of this board (Adult Entertainment) is a topic that many people find offencive in and of itself. We pride ourselves on being open-minded and uninhibited. Isn't it a bit hypocritical to turn around and start banning words?

What I find hard to fathom is the sexist nature of words being offensive: why is the 'C' word a bad/coarse/objectionable word while calling someone a "short form of Richard" not as offensive? They both refer to genitalia. What if men professed an abhorrance to this word? I've never been able to understand this form of hipocrasy. *Why* is it so offensive.

Btw, just for the record, I'm not a big fan of the word or anything, I just find the duality baffling.

I've always found the censorship of certain words pretty silly.

I have another story. Another ex gf of mine and her peer group used the word "chick" frequently. She was a very independent individual and somewhat younger than me. My gf previous to that and a generation behind had a problem with the word. I saw this apparent new outlook as a step in getting past having to fight for the recognition of women in society and a type of empowerment in the acceptance of the word. If the word is no longer of offence, to me, that is personal empowerment and rises above what others label you regardless of their intent.

I've since found out that recent generations still have a problem with the word. I've always used the word "chick" and I don't mean it in a derogatory way. If anything, to me it constitutes sexy and cool. I find the term "ladies" as some people use it patronising and hypocritical.

As I look at the word "****" (<unt ) which Daddyio so kindly emblazoned in big red letters for all to see, it gradually loses it's impact. My first reaction was that it looks "ugly" Either way, using the word addresses it's perception and connotation. Partially censoring it, only makes it seem more "OK" and full censorship only affirms its percieved negativity. Whatever the word and how it is used will still be the same. That cannot change.

Much like the word "nigger" I find people that dance around it, by saying "the N word" , not to be facing the generally perceived connotation and almost patronising. It's an ugly word, I don't use it except for the sake of discussion. I think we should face up to it and / or come to terms with it.

Just out of curiosity and for the sake of argument I'll type some words that I find offencive and words that may be already on the edit list. I can probably guess which ones will come up as edited with asterisks. The point is where do we draw the line. In the end it's an individual choice whether we choose to respect others and their perception of words.

nigger - ugly, isn't it ?

whore - I detest this word to varying degrees, depending on connotation, but it's literal meaning is not necessarily derogatory.

asshole

bitch

muthafucka

slut - to me this can be totally dependant on context and / or intent.

No kidding Booty. It kinda proves the point that you cannot address something if we can't even see the friggin word in question.

If someone were to come along and read this thread, they wouldn't know what word we were talking about. If people aren't aware something may be deemed offencive to some, then they can't really be faulted for it, as they didn't know any better.

Personally I had no idea the word which is now obliterated was derogatory to females and hence offencive to some males. I've never seen it as gender specific. Now, I know.
