Let my give you my two cents if I may. I am a non practicing Christian who fled now infamous Islamic Republic of Iran after the so called revoluion and thank God reached Canada and considered mysely blessed and lucky.
Where I was born is "the old countery" now. I am a Canadian now and sometime even more of a Canadian than the ones born here. I love this country, I love HER history, geography and politics (not the politicians).
The trouble with Canada is this blessed "political correctness" that is choking us all. We and I mean we as a society are so brainwashed with political correctness that is making us not respect and/or value what we are for the fear of possibly, God forbid, offending the "new Canadians".
I used to regularly go to this variety store across my apartmant building, for a a couple of weeks I didn't see the owner so I asked the son where his dad was. The answer was "Dad's gone home" and we all know what he meant by "home".
Another time I was talking to a co worker and he mentioned that his wife "had gone home" for vacation and we all know what he meant by "home".
As long as Canada is not HOME for us we will be in this situation. We all remember all those "Canadians" who had to be "rescued" from Lebanon and brought home don't we?
I grew up and was raised in a moslem society but I never made to feel anything but equal and my Armenian culture, language church and traditions were respected just like their own. But all changed when the dear Ayatollah was brought in and the Shah made to leave. That was the beginning of militant Islam which was totally alien to me and majority of us.
If the so called revolution was nat orchastrated and the regime changed, USSR wouldn't have invaded Afghanistan (so no need to support AL Quada), no first Gulf War, no 911, no invasion of Afghanistan or Iraq, no fear from nuclear Iran or Hezbollah or Hamas. And the list goes on.
Islam on its own is not the trouble, the militant Islam is. But as long as the majority of the moslems here in Canada or anywhere else in the world do not oppose hijacking of their religion we have a problem in here and all other western societies and guess what? Because of Political Correctness not much we can do or else we will be branded by the "R" word and called anti immigrant.
I wish anybody who came to Canada stayed here and became a citizen, did so because of the love of this country and HER generous people.
I wish anybody who came to Canada stayed here and became a citizen, did not do so just to milk the system as much as possible and return "home" if the going got tough.
The greatest disservice we are doing to all new or old Canadians is not teaching them our history, traditions and culture as if there are none to be taught or be ashamed of it.
One afternoon last year I was driving back to the office with my then boss (yes I just got laid off). It was around 4:30 PM and we were passing over a bridge on 401 where there were tens and tens of people gathered paying their last respects to a fallen soldier. His ignorant comment was "don't this people have anything better to do than blocking a lane during rush hour?" I couldn't help but tell him if it wasn't for the sacrifices made in 1951-1953 he would have been a rice farmer or worse in Kim Il Sung's country not a business owner in Toronto. (My Comment did not sit well with him at all)
Bottom Line is our fore fathers gave blood for this country to be what it is. We owe it to our fallen in Vimy, Ypres, Somme, Normandy, Holland , Korea and yes even Afghanistan. Lets teach our kids and make sure everybody who comes to our shores learns it too.
This was suppposed to be just two cents worth of my ramblings but went too far. Hope I didnt offend anybody with my political UNcorrectness.
