I read pancreatic cancer has an almost 100% death rate (eventually).
Some survive for 5 to 10 years, but very few do. Most have 3 to 6 months to live

Can anyone confirm that??

Scary if true, I hope I never get that :(

There was a thread here a few months ago (before you were here) when news first hit that he had it...
lol...

Too bad the photographer don't have better things to do. I wish they would stop following Farrah Fawcett as well.

I could be wrong, but from what I understand about Pancreatic cancer is that there are no real symptoms. By the time you find out you have it, there is not much that they can do for you because it is too far along. And yes, the survival rate is pretty miniscule and the length of life remaining is rarely over a year or two, with most people having much less time.

I used to be invested in a Pharmaceutical research firm called Lorus which was working on a drug called Virulizin. Apparently, it showed some promised of increased lifespan from an average of 6 months to 8-9 months. The last I heard, it was declined by the FDA due to poor findings in their stage III clinical trials. This was years ago, so I don't know if they ever managed to get back on track with Virulizin drug.

As to Mr. Swayze, he has entertained me for countless hours through his acting performances in such great films such as Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Point Break, Roadhouse, Youngblood, Red Dawn, and The Outsiders. He is a wonderful actor and it is an absolute shame what is happening to him. I sincerely hope that he'll be able to beat it, but if not, I hope he does not suffer too much, and I wish him a pain free departure from this world.

I agree, leave these people alone. I have to admit that I silently cheer every time some famous person takes a whack at some paparazzi asshole.

Cancer just sucks the life out of you and you can see that by Patrick's pic. I have had a couple family members who deid of cancer and one of my best friends had it too. She was a larger woman, about 220 lbs but when she died, she weighed less than 100 lbs and looked like she was about 90 yrs old. She was only 57.

I will not look at the pic and a pox on the razzi who took it.

Luciano Pavarotti was taken by pancriatic cancer, he lasted 8 months. However; his constant fear of losing his voice made him abuse the rest of his body, eventually something would take him.

What makes Swayze's ordeal disturbing is that he always took excellent care of himself. He had none of Pavarotti's anxiety and reports of him being a chain smoker are unsubstantiated. As an action star he was good at what he did, he deserved to live as long as Clint Eastwood.

As for Pavarotti, he had the build of a rugby player before anxiety bloated him. The piece he sings is a dedication to Swayze.

Swayze has been a 60-a-day smoker for years, and research shows that smokers are twice as likely to get pancreatic cancer as non-smokers.

Things we inflict upon ourselves..duh..sorry no sympathy here..

My brother-in-law's Father and Grandfather were both taken by Pancreatic cancer, and neither lasted more than a year. From what I understand on the subject, lifestyle choices don't impact this one in the same way as other diseases or cancers (ie. lung or mouth cancer due to smoking, heart disease due to excessive fat intake etc.). I think Pancreatic is more like winning a lottery (or more like getting the losing ticket). Steve Jobs (of Apple Computer fame) got a type of Pancreatic cancer (the type that you can beat) and yet he is a very healthy and fit guy.

Certainly, lifestyle choices are going to increase your odds of getting hit with it, but I think this type of cancer is more random, or possibly hereditary (ie. my brother-in-law is getting checked twice per year for it since both his Father and Grandfather died of it! )

I also agree that the paparazzi taking photos of Patrick Swayze or any other celebrity for that matter, when in this type of condition, is positively tasteless. Unfortunately, as long as people are willing to buy the magazines or watch the tabloids, there is a market for it. Welcome to our wonderful world!

Oh the amount of sensitivity and sympathy that we human beings offer one another when they're on their last breaths. Would you say this to a good friend or a relative when they were dying, or are you saving this amazing lack of sensitivity for just people that you don't know?

Steve Jobs has stepped down as CEO of Apple, he's not doing so well.

I would say it to anyone that is stupid enough to do harm to their body by using products that have been proven to cause cancers.

I wouldn't call it a lack of sensitivity but call it what you will.

There is no question in my mind that smoking causes cancer. Eating too much results in obesity which has a long list of illnesses attached to it. Excessive drinking or drug use causes health problems. Are we not to feel pity for any of them?

In my humble opinion, people knocking on death's door deserve respect and sympathy irrespective of how they got there.

Swayze

Dead Man Walking - and I'm a cancer survivor; 29 years ago in March. My oncologist's son, an only child, died of pancreatic cancer. His Father did the exam and knew right away his son was dead in a few months. Swayze's gone soon too.
