So am I able to log on and use most apps with these PAYG plans?
PAYGO plans aren't generally meant for the type of customer who wants to run apps. You might be able to do it, but you'll get raped on the data charges.

If you can accept the limits, and your regular phone is LTE, install fongo and use that. It is a softphone, an app that uses your internet connection to make phone calls.

It's free. You get a Toronto phone number and unlimited calling to all major Canadian cities. They are hoping you will sign up for an international calling or text messaging plan but you don't have to.

When you are done using it, UNINSTALL. That way there is no trace of it on your phone. For browsing, install an alternate browser like dolphin or opera. Again, when you are done browsing UNINSTALL. When you are ready to install again go to android market and in thirty seconds you can reinstall and log back in.

When the app is installed and running you can receive calls back on your fongo number, when you uninstall it they will go to voicemail.

The main limitation is you obviously can't use the contact list on your phone to store numbers you want to keep private and the in app contacts will get wiped when you uninstall. But you can get around that by storing the numbers online somewhere, in an e-mail to yourself or whatever.

This wouldn't stop a forensic examination of your phone from finding it, like if the police got a pro to examine it, but unless someone goes all pro and searches for what apps you uninstalled it seems safer to me than risking someone finding a physical hobby phone, which is a lot harder to explain away.

You can use most apps. No data means no mail, but you can still use web mail in safari. No Netflix but YouTube works. It's a bit random but for $10 a month what do you expect.

And check out the iPhone app burner. Lets you create burner numbers on your phone, with text and calls. Calls from the burner number just appears to be 'to' the burner number on your phone.

Bad, bad experiences with Telus, I have had. I also find that they have very high rates. 50 cents per minute compared to 30 or even 20 with Fido, on a solely pay as you go basis. Texting is also high, 35 cents versus 25 for Fido. I also find that Fido transactions and activity reports are clearer than with Telus. Why is it when some one calls you and your voicemail picks up it registers as an outgoing call from your phone? This even before I had voicemail set up with Telus. Luckily, they didn't charge me for it, although the morons who I asked why when I was overseas I was getting outgoing calls when my SIM was not even in a phone; it was locked up at home.

Anyway, these were my experiences with Telus. Personally, on a strictly pay as you go, no monthly plan, I prefer Fido. Oh, and the Rogers/Fido/7-11 etc. network will also let you use an older 2G unlocked handset if you want to go cheap. Can't do that with Telus/Bell.

BTW, Bell wanted to charge me $35 for a SIM card; prepay for set-up/administration on their network. Fido only wanted me to buy a SIM card for $10, no set-up charge/administration charge, and $10 additional for initial air time credit. Fuck Bell.
I agree. I was using Telus but now they raised the price so if it may be better to go for another company.

Telus Pay and Talk

$5 dollars a month (250 txt msgs)
$10 dollars a month (2500 txt msgs)

I keep extra money on in case I need to call but I do most of my booking through text.

These are add-ons to a base service. What is the per minute rate that you pay as a starting point?

It's not cracked. It's called the iPhone Spider-Man Edition(TM). It's a limited edition that is custom made, so it costs more.

Can someone educate me here.

lets say I pick up an older hobby iPhone 4.... Rogers, Telus or Bell....whatever...even cracked.
...
is it better if phone is 'cracked' for more options?

I use Public Mobile. Its like 20 dollars a month for unlimited talk, text and data. Anywhere in the GTA, outside the area its 15cents a minute or text.Dont have to show ID, can make up any name you want on the account, and can pay cash in store so theres no paper trail.

And lets say I want 'pay as you go'...do I just go to a Bell kiosk for instance and set it up. Is it hard? Can it be anonymous?

Sorry always been on plans and Need advice! What is typical ( reasonable) cost?

is it better if phone is 'cracked' for more options?

Thanks

I believe fmahovalich may be referring to unlocking the phone and switching to a different 'pay as you go' provider. Just a guess.

With 7-11 you just activate the sim online. No personal info. You'll need the imei number of the phone. Uses rogers cell network. So a locked rogers phone will even work. Or just use the cheap phone they sell. I believe they sell the smaller sim cards too now. A balance of $25 is good for a year but remember they deduct a small fee for 911 every month. They have a browsing plan which means being able to surf webpages and web based emails. Won't be able to downloads apps or watch netflix but don't think that was your intention. Pay cash for top ups. They are good for up to a year if you don't top up right away.

Thank you.

A couple questions. Lets say it an iPhone locked to Rogers....or unlocked....would I still use Rogers.

At 7-11 If I get a SIM card, they assign me a phone number...CORRECT?

You say I need to go online to activate....is there some sort of trace? Or is this a one off?

And the top up..where do I do that?
pwhat if the card runs out....how to I maintain the same phone number? New card? Online?

Sorry..I'm pretty slow in this area...and maybe I'm over thinking it.

You don't use Rogers. You use SpeakOut but Speakout rents service from Rogers. You deal with SpeakOut. In 6 years, three phones, and two cities, I've never dealt with a person. It's all via the phone keypad.

They assign you a number with the SIM card. You don't get to pick a cool one. I have never gone online to do anything with 7-11 SpeakOut. I use the phone pad to key in data - mostly a 15 digit code from my 7-11 receipt. When you want to top up, you ask the cashier at 7-11 for a (eg) $50 topup, you pay cash, you get a receipt with a long code, you punch it in.

If you run out of minutes, or on your 12 month anniversary, you get a grace period to top up before the number goes away. After 12 months you have to top up but the unexpired amount carries over. I used to use an old unlocked RAZR, now I use my old iPhone 3GS.

Another vote for 7-11 speakout. I bought a $100 card when they had a 20% bonus sale so I got $120 in my account. All cash, no trace.

The other option is a 30 day value plan. Pay $20, $25 or $30 for unlimited texts with either 100 anytime/minutes or 200 anytime minutes or 300 anytime minutes. Longer anytime minutes available if you don't want the text option. You get voice mail, caller ID, activation and incoming texts. There is no activation fee and it works immediately when you go on line to activate online. I got mine at 7 11. Easy peesy. You get a number assigned to you based on your location.
