guyroch I disagree. For the first time I see some light at the end of the tunnel. Lets face it Hagman is, at best, a 2nd liner, Stajan a 3rd liner, White a 4th D man and Mayers an AHL player. We didn't lose much.

Getting Phaneuf now makes Kaberle expendable at the deadline. In return we should be able to get a front line offensive player. Now its time to dump Toskala and run.

I'd be surprised in Phaneuf is in Toronto next season.

Christ, he might just retire if he has to stay there!

J.S. Giguere to Toronto for Toskala and Blake.

It's often said that the team that gets the best player wins the trade. I think the Leafs win both trades.

I agree, I thinks it's a great trade... Both of them. We just kept the cap space the same, and got a legitamate d-man, and legit potential captain!

I think its a great trade....

This season is done so might as well plan for next season....

Sad to see Hagman and White go but they along with Stajan and Mayers are all replaceable...

Phaneuf is definitely a quality defenceman and has the numbers to prove it....Hopefully a change of scenery will be just what he needs to get back on track....

Add to the fact that Toskala and Blake are gone (and the addition of Giguere) - well its a good if not great day for the Leafs.....

Great deal for Toronto!
Top 10 defenceman for a bunch of 3rd liners.
Paves the way for Burke to move Kaberle for a 1st pick or more.

We also get a young 6' 5" defenceman in Keth Aulie who was good enough to play on Canada's world junior team and is rated as Calgary's 3rd best prospect

I'm not sure the Leafs really got anything in these trades - Phaneuf hasn't been playing well at all - passed up for the Olympic team. And Giguere's been riding the bench all season because he can't get it done anymore.

Hopefully a change of scenery is best for all concerned. Phaneuf is the best player in the deal IMHO so I like the trade.

Burke has been consistently trading for beligerance and Truculence.... as if with Blinders on...
Did he not notice last night that it was Hockey Talent.... ie Sedins... who kicked the Leafs ass after being down 3-0

Talent wins ..... Kessel is not talent...any body can come in and take a ton of shots..if he had talent he would score on more of them
Bottom line is Burke wants HIS kinda guys... and the Leafs will spend years in the cellar..... with hmm...... No Draft Picks(thanks Burkie) to show for it.
I dont mind the trades.... but they gave up a bit of little bit of offence they had..... they are further behind the 8 ball in that sense....
Phaneuf has been chastized by the Calgary fans and even the coach said he was a big problem in the dressing room....
Burke looks on with blinders and will smile the first time Phaneuf nails someone coming over the blue line.... even though the Leafs will lose the game.
does that count as a stat to get the Leafs into the playoffs... or does what the Sedins/Burrows did count...?

Burkie - get the Leafs some real talent.... you are a big time failure as a GM so far in my eyes

I totally agree with your assessment. I'm sure there were reasons Calgary would get rid of Phaneuf but we wouldn't have a chance to get a stud D without taking some risks. High risk yields high return and I as a fan love these kinds of bold moves, especially during times when the team sucks. Afterall, you knew Burke couldn't just sit and watch Boston picking first overall next June without at least making some desparate moves to avoid that from happening.

Salary cap will only be an issue if Phaneuf fails to perform up to expectation.

Except Tomas Kaberle has a No-Trade Provision in his contract.

As of today 31/01/10, Kaberle has not requested a trade, and Burke says he will not ask him to do so.

Kind of makes his expendability moot, no ?

I hope the leaf fans appreciate all Ian White did for the team.

An underdog since day one he worked his ass off and was a very effective player for TO.

Dumping the Blake salary was brilliant and Toskala was not coming back.

J.S. is a gamble of sorts but should pay off.

Between the legs of some hottie
Blake was a big bust. Toskala was never consistant although he played okay with our weak D in front of him. I have NO EXPECTATIONS whatsoever for the Leafs right now. If they make the playoffs in the next 3 years, I'd be tickled pink.

I still watch 5-6 games a year and have no plans on wearing a brown paper bag over my head anytime soon.

you mean the coach ripping into him for being a disruption to the team and how he's a defensive liability???
2nd highest PP goal scorer next to Paul Coffey in his first 5 seasons...... he's not a stay at home defenceman but who cares ....are you telling me kaberle , beauchemin and white are really good at playing D ??? give me a break.....bottom line is he will bring an awesome shot from the point on the PP , he's tough and he's in his prime....

From TSN...

Since he entered the NHL in the 2005-06 season Phaneuf is tops among defenceman with 75 goals (2nd Sheldon Souray - 68), power-play goals with 48 (2nd Zdeno Chara - 41), game-winning goals with 21 (2nd Dan Boyle - 15) and shots at 1,150 (2nd Chara - 992) over that span.

In addition, Phaneuf (48) ranks second to Paul Coffey (50) in power-play goals by a defenceman over the first five seasons of their career and he is tied with Denis Potvin for game winning goals (21) over the same span.
