i doubt the police will bother. if they lay charges now, by the time the charges get to trial, weed will probably already be legalized and the accused will be entitled to take advantage of the new laws.

Toronto set to crack down on illegal marijuana dispensarieshttp://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...wn-on-marijuana-dispensaries/article29989354/http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...wn-on-marijuana-dispensaries/article29989354/

In a sweeping crackdown, Toronto officials say that, by month’s end, every single one of the city’s growing number of marijuana dispensaries – estimated at up to 100 storefronts across town – will be facing charges for violating zoning rules and up to $50,000 in fines.

Word of the blitz came as Mayor John Tory labelled the growth of pot shops “alarming,” and called for city staff to study the licensing regimes now in place in Vancouver and Victoria to see if Toronto could bring in similar rules that would control, for example, how close dispensaries can set up to schools. In the meantime, Mr. Tory also asked city staff to work with Toronto police “to address the health and safety concerns of neighbours and businesses” as the pot shops proliferate.
Tory took his time, had hearings, and then okay'ed illegal Uber cabs, but on this issue he's going for an immediate hardcore crackdown. :frusty:

Considering the close ties to Wynne and Justin I'm not surprised by this. Quid pro quo for the transit funding. Remember I said the Liberals have ties to the pot growers and Wynne wants the revenue?

The pot growers ran ahead. It's a hot potato to bust so they will sit on their hands for a year. Get as many as possible via "complaints" then kill the rest with legislation via gov't stores.

So stock up!

Some Health Canada approved growers have Liberal ties; some Conservative.

You are a quick study, arguably even quicker if you didn't smoke? Does chronic cannabis use increase paranoia and the propensity to accused people of formulating conspiracy theories?

Thats not true at all. Shoppers has been selling illegal drugs for a long time now, why do you think they had to close all locations yesterday??! They were getting raided MAAANNNNNNNNNNN!!!!

Why is it you can smoke a joint on any street corner in public, but all hell breaks lose if you get a handjob behind close doors. We live in a fucked up society. Lol!

Maybe men can get a prescription for hand jobs since there are studies that they reduce the risk of prostate cancer. :whoo:

Well none other than Loblaws's top dog Galen Weston is on record less than a week ago saying he wants to sell you a quarter oz of bud along side your other weekly grocery purchases.
Loblaws is now the parent company of Shoppers. Shoppers stopped selling cigarettes years ago even though it is a legal product. Wonder if Loblaws and/or Shoppers will sell pot when and if pot becomes a legal product?

P.S. I visited a pot shop yesterday for research purposes. They said they are not actually selling pot now but just getting ready for the day when it is a legal product.

P.S. 2: I called Loblaws and was told that some stores sell cigarettes and some do not. Wonder if the same will apply to pot when it is legal?
Wal-Mart does not sell cigarettes even though it is a legal product so they may not (or may) sell pot when it is legal.

The crackdown is coming....very soon...and it will be for licensing offences rather than criminal allegations. Seems like the City wants to do something after abject failure with Uber/Lyft but if there are enough protests and fight backs, maybe things will change. It took one vendor on Spadina back in the 90s to finally change the no Sunday shopping laws that puritanical Ontario/Toronto still had...kept gumming up the system by refusing to bend and having more and more supporters so that the laws did change.

Yes, the city is going to sidestep the issue of cannabis legality, and hit dispensaries with threats - close down, or face fines for violating zoning bylaws. This is going to be a mess.
And it seems unfair. There are some dispensaries that have been operating for a while with no complaints. But after the law came down on shops on the west coast, many of them whack-a-moled their operation to Toronto, which is why so many new operations have opened up recently, often near the already existing stores.

This is starting to remind me of the Food Cart Fiasco from around 2010. The license fee was so high, there was too much red tape, and the regs on where they could operate were so confining, that the businesses who signed up early could not make any money.

Interesting article.

"All this report really shows is that more people in Washington State are likely consuming cannabis, and thus might have some THC in their systems at the time of an accident. But since having THC in your system tells us nothing about your potential impairment, it would be like a report showing how many people involved in accidents had drunk a beer in the last week," said Taylor West, deputy director of the group.

And now it's happened. The raids were conducted, the police chief has some photo ops, the mayor is happy...

and I guess that it's now impossible to buy cannabis in Toronto. Great job, everyone!
Sorry Matt, but sympathy is limited. They opened stores selling a still illegal product. And were given ample warning.

I would also add cocaine was found. Does that that sound legit?

I have limited sympathy for these people. The product is illegal, production and distribution of the medical stuff is highly regulated and access is pretty easy with a doctors prescription. Legitimate users don't need to go to these places. Parliament has yet to consider the issue so it is clear theses store fronts are off side the law. And then all the bullshit about being "dispensaries" and some of the writing "prescriptions" .... The city had to move on them or leave the door open to anyone else that wants to make a mockery of other rules and regs. Personally, I think it should be legalized for recreational purposes (so should this hobby :)) but until that is the case the city and law enforcement has little choice.

There's always a choice. They could have chosen not to raid a damned thing and save the many millions of dollars that the raids plus court cases are going to cost the taxpayer. Or if they really felt compelled to put a damper on the proliferation of pot shops, they could have randomly raided only a single shop every day for the next several days and probably seen them all close up in response - again, at a much lower cost to the taxpayer, fewer criminal cases, less criminal records for people involved in something that will soon be legalized, etc etc. They could have spent police resources arresting people that profit from actually harmful drugs. And even if they had chosen to go big and do a huge operation with multiple raids because, lol, cops... they could have done so without making themselves look like such fucking idiots. A good start would be for some PR flack to have whispered into the police chief's ear before he started blathering to the press and explained that even the most head-up-the-ass Ann Landers types now know that pot is not some sort of horrifyingly dangerous hallucinogenic drug that has deadly consequences. What is this, 1967? (I smoked one joint and thought I could fly, now I have to live the rest of my life in a wheelchair!) Law enforcement had a world of choice, and they chose stupid through and through.
