Electronic petitions are crap.... Zero chance of being acted upon unless there are Written signatures on Paper...... When one of those comes around I'll sign it though....

Won't be signing

Sorry...I support the legislation. For the few times cops may get it wrong and subsequent court cases will overturn their action...the majority of times they will get it right. This type of law stands as a deterrent...to try to discourage street racing. Hopefully it will have some success doing this. Too many innocent people have been killed and seriously injured as a result of street racing.

I agree. I will not be signing this either. Going 150 and over is just plain stupid and an accident waiting to happen. Speed limits are in place for a reason.

I totally agree

with clamping down on street racers but...................this legislation has been widley abused by allowing it to be used against people who are not racing, just speeding. You can also use your car for example if turn on a green before the on coming traffic proceeds, etc. They call it a street racing law, but it is not. It has wide uses against everyday occurances. Read the details of the law, it will be abused as it already has been. It is nothing but a money grab.

If you feel that strongly and believe that you are right then why not go ripping past the next OPP cruiser you see, have your car taken for a week and then use the courts to make your case and try to get the law struck down?

Just speeding at 50 km/hr over the limit.

If you go that fast, you endanger everyone on the road, not just yourself.

I'm not sure what you mean with the first sentence.

I haven't read about anyone complaining about their vehicles being taken unfairly. If there was abuse, people would be screaming bloody murder.

I'm sorry, but I support this law as well. The speed limit on the 401 is maybe too low, but 150 is still way too fast.

I don't think the cops make much of a profit by impounding your car for a week.
As for the $5000 fine. If you are so stupid as to go more than 50km over the limit, you are lucky to be allowed to walk the street.

And last but not least..As for violating the rights of the accused and abusing the spirit of the law.... what about the rights of the endless list of victims of speeding, racing and aggressive driving?
There will always be the opprtunity for corrupt cops to abuse any law. I think this one is long overdue.

(and I aint no bleedin heart liberal..but I drive over 80,000km/yr and there sure is a lot of idiots out there)

Thumbs up to those TERBITES who voiced a similar sentiment.

Ditto... I put close to 50K a year on and the number of times I've almost been taken out by these idiots ain't small! Whether it's "just" excessive speeding or "racing", get the pricks off the road.

I overheard a customer of mine bragging about how he was stopped doing 240 (in a 100) in his new Carrera, and how the cop let him off because he "liked his car"... I don't know which part of the story is BS... the 240 or the cop letting him off... or the whole thing, but anyone driving that speed needs to lose their license for a very long time...

I agree that people driving excessive speeds need to lose their car and their license. I think the problem with the law is that the individual gets punished prior to having their day in court. It's worse than guilty until proven innocent. You are just guilty and there's no going back. That's what is wrong and why I support the petition.

50 over....

That's pretty friggin fast.... I'm all for doing 120 on a 400 series hwy but 150 is reckless. I'm all for taking the car of anyone who feels that my life and that of my children is so pointless that they want to rocket down the road like they are on a race track. Heck the other day some asshat passed me on the 400 by using the paved shoulder.... only to get off at the next exit 2km away. If it was up to me I'd like to see these idiots have their cars crushed into a cube in some sort of public ceremony at queens park.

FWIW I do think they should change the wording from "street racing" to "excessive speeding". That way the folks who keep whining about the "ordinary people" who get their cars impounded and have to pay a huge fine can stop saying that the law is being abused.

Driving is not a right.....

why would any sane person be against this law?
I am apparantly sane according to the last check up anyway. I don't support street racing in any way shape or form. I do have major problems with this law.

1) Police do not under the constitution have the right to pronounce sentence on you. That is for a judge to do if you are found guilty.

If the police want to impound a car they catch racing all they have to do is have it towed for a saftey inspection, the vehical stays there until inspected, that can take a while.

If Mr Fantino wants to stop racing he should start using his police to patrol areas where racing happens. Not standing them on the side of a ramp looking at seatbelts.

You can not stop a drag race at night , but you can stop the idiots who drive on the 400 series roads at very high speeds

You don't have to have a partner to be "racing", you could be just trying to beat your (or someone else's) previous top speed or time to get between points a and b. So it is fairly irrelevant whether the name of the law is racing or excessive speeding.

As whether the cops should have the power to impound your car.... Well if you were walking around waving a gun or a sword or some other weapon I doubt they would allow you to keep the item until a judge passes sentance. Using your car to drive 50+ over the speed limit sounds like a potential weapon to me.

If you're stupid enough to drive that fast, I have no sympathy for you whatsoever.

all of that can be avoided by not speeding

This ridiculous law takes away your rights, as well will not solve any of the issues it was intended to make us believe it would. If they truly want racers, then go after racers and I would support something.
I agree with most others here in supporting this.
I feel like you're saying its ok to go 50+ if you're just going by yourself for the fun of it or whatever reason you may have. But if there's another car running right beside you then this rule would only take effect then.

You shouldnt be going 50 over anyways so whats the complain about if you arent planning on going that fast.
You might be focused on the 'racing' part too much, this is simply another 'speeding' law. If you're going that fast, then you definitely should be penalized for it, and i'm not just talking about fines.

I also agree that hwy driving is much faster now. Doing 100 on the right lane seems like you're just driving locally, but at times doing 120 (going with flow of traffic) also seems a little slow. I
