RIP: Desktop Linux

Months ago, I wrote on here that desktop Linux was essentially dead. For the Linux fanbois or idiots, that means only Linux (in its various incarnations) running on a PC and/or laptop; it does not include servers, does not included embedded devices, et cetera.

Anyways, it seems that Microsoft no longer considers desktop Linux as a competitive threat:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/micr...-rivals/3756?tag=search-results-rivers;item12

And even journalists who cover the Linux market are now saying the same thing:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/windows-endgame-desktop-linuxs-failure/9109

This thread's title may be a bit premature but the death watch for desktop Linux is on!

Sounds an awful lot like, 'Mission Accomplished'!....

That Dubya muttered a few years back!....:eyebrows:

Personally I don't worry about the OP a bit.
Will leave that to the Apple fanbois....

So it is that while I’m now more sure than ever that Linux, thanks to its presence in servers, cloud, and mobile devices, will eventually be more important than Windows, I also think that almost no one will know it. Linux will–indeed already is–become the foundation on which many other user systems will be built. But both desktop Windows and Linux are going to decline.
This only confirms what I have discovered! Linux IS the ticket!

Confirms what? That it's going to be the underlying OS in various products/services or that desktop Linux will decline?

I wouldn't worry too much about desktop Linux, it's going to be around for a while but at this point I doubt that it will ever go beyond a miniscule number of the consumer population.

Didn't Microsoft said once a computer doesn't need more than 256kb ram for the next 25years? :D
Bill Gates did, but close enough.

As for Linux...as long as my old Dell laptop lasts, I'll keep using Linux on it.
After seeing how it's a bit faster than my cousin's MBP (macbook pro) which he paid a premium for and he does everything I do, surf, email, I'll keep using it.
Even Windows' updates are starting to piss me off because after a download, you still have to restart the computer, bla bla bla.
Linux is night and day compared to Windows and Mac OS. After reading about it on here and a few of my friends (hardcore geeks) who kept telling me to try it, I had to give it a shot.

Never thought I'd like it as much as I do now, but it certainly as save me from tossing away my laptop and saving some MONEYYYYYYYYYYY, something some fanbois seem to be obsessed about, huh OTB? ;-)

desktop linux will be around for a long long time. it will never reach mainstream consumption, but who cares. I'm using Ubuntu right now and have used linux for roughly 15 years when i started with red hat. at this time the only TRUE mainstream OS is Windows as Mac OS is still only around 10% share vs Linux < 2% worldwide.

I'm in a net cafe right now where there are roughly 50 computers running on Ubuntu including 5 27" iMacs.

Was Swyping on my Android at the time and the screen is relatively small, my apologies.
Meant to say "has saved".

At least you're a lot more consistent with your simple spelling errors.
This is one of the rare moments you'll catch me, enjoy the moment, lavish in it, go tug one. :)

iPhone have Swype yet? Really kick ass way of typing, errr, Swyping, no, that'd be typing.
Or is Jobs too cheap to fork over some cash to get it on the iPhone? lol

Says the guy who hangs out on a Canadian message board...
He's a good Christian man with a significant other who doesn't know he's on here.

Sounds about right.

I've known about Linux for years but only got around to using it a bit over 4½ years ago. Back then I was toying around with the idea of getting a Mac because of the move to Vista and the way Vista was getting hammered by mainly the Apple fanbois (BTW after SP1 Vista is/was a rock solid OS). It was then a buddy at work who used Linux told me to give Linux a try. He said Linux won't cost you a penny and since you would have to learn a new Mac OS, give Linux a try first. Then if you don't Like Linux, go out and buy that ridiculously overpriced Mac. Well that turned out to be the best PC advice I ever got. Tried out Linux and loved it and it didn't cost a penny! All my PCs are now dual boot systems but now over 4 years later Windows is rarely used or needed. I can do EVERYTHING needed with Linux Ubuntu, all self taught with any helped needed coming from the excellent Ubuntu Help Forums.

It really is nice to be free of BOTH Windows and Mac!....

hiya danibbler, yup they keep fragmenting Linux...and changes to Gnome, KDE, Firefox piss me off...so gotta use one of the more exotic configs with XFCE, Openbox, or Fluxbox...I think most people would just go back to Windows or Apple, instead of playing musical chairs with Desktop Linux configs.

hiya Cobster, precisely...I updated a Windows 7 box & a Linux one the other night...FOUR god damn reboots on Windows, Linux was zero hassle, and I could continue browsing without worrying about something getting mucked up...shutdown computers, next morning Windows 7 had to finish installing the updates, and there were still some more, holy shit!

hiya b4u, yup many headlines are nothing more than sensationalized opinion...I've used Unix/Linux for ages, Linux Desktops are more of a hobby OS, use what bits you want...cool that some distros have evolved to the point where they are fairly no-brainer and it has opened up Linux to many more people.

Apple & Microsoft is for the rest of the herd...holding their hands along the way, then punching them in the face and leaving them in shackles.

LOL!
I dread having to boot into W7 for that reason.
Haven't used W7 in about a month and know there will be plenty of updates there waiting, when I do. Plus the AV expired so that will be included along with CCleaner having to be updated.

With Linux none of that endless security crap is needed....

hiya WoodPeckr, yup good ol' CrapCleaner can be annoying with updates too...so much anti-virus/spyware nag screens...I usually use the PC tools freebies if I am forced to use a Windows box, I do not recall having to enter email address for free annual license.

Linux is the shit, esp if you have an older box. Security hands down linux wins etc. There are enough varieties to satisfy everyone. I'm sure it's been linked distrowatch.org/com pick your poison and enjoy. For your main box pick up a used mac and/or pc all in one

Distrowatch.com is the place to go for all the latest Linux info and links. They list to top 100 Linux distros and heaven knows how many others there are after that.

Yep, and sure enough, on the reboot, the updates take some time as well.
Much prefer Linux for the basic stuff (surfing, emails) then when I hit Photoshop it's PC.
