And how would have Ford's beneficiaries worked for a possible payoff? The real payoff will be when Mr. Ford starts setting up his own 'untendered' contracts with his best friends to sell off the cities' services (He'll make it look tendered of course). And what its it with the union hatred around here. Not that I belong to a union. I don't. Unions can definitely lead to inefficiency and waste in SOME cases. But I'd hardly call unions bloodsucking compared to what some corporations are capable of (banks & credit card companies anyone?). And in terms of economic affect, I'd rather have the city pay the several thousand decently paid unionized workers contributing to the toronto/canadian economy, than have the city pay an outsourced company the same amount but who then pay their workers minimum wage, with all the profits only feed a few weathly owners. If you can find a single case of where a city outsourced services and SAVED money, I'll be amazed.
I'm glad that you think you can predict the future regarding Ford's motives. With that skill I'm surprised you haven't won the lottery multiple times over. What a ridiculous group of statements.

Hey Tangwich, it is a proven fact that abused spouses silently hide their abuse for years until they snap. Just because ford got his daddy's friends to drop the charges and talked his way out of it doesn't mean he hasn't been beating his wife for years. That poor woman needs help.
Sounds good Dewalt.. so if you ever have a fight with your spouse/gf/partner and they accuse you of abuse, we the taxpayers can avoid the cost of a trial and just send you straight to jail since you HAVE to be guilty in your world.

I keep hearing the same argument from the ford supporters which goes something like this: "Duuuuh, I like him because..umm...I dunno why. He is loud?" Without anyone giving one point of why he would be a responsible leader. Not one point has been made that can be validated as to why he is the right man for the job. There is a whole host of points against him - pretty much the wife battering, the drinking, the run ins with the law...do you REALLY think you want someone without any integrity running this city?
I have a suspicion I'm wasting my time because I don't think Dewalt actually reads what other people post. He simply sticks to the Smitherman talking points about how anyone who doesn't support George is stupid, and if we insult them enough, maybe we can embarrass them into voting for our guy.

Nonetheless, on the off-chance that Dewalt is serious, I'll address his point.

Why people like Ford: Because Ford is advocating for less spending at City Hall, less wasteful spending at City Hall, and lower taxes.

Why people don't like Smitherman: Because Smitherman's so-called "vision" for Toronto would include more spending, more waste, and higher taxes.

Ford may or may not be able to successfully implement his agenda. But it is a better agenda than the waste-and-tax agenda proposed by Mr. Smitherman.

I hope that is clear enough for you.

Why do you say that ?
Oh I don't know.. there's a number of possiblities.. maybe he loves his wife and is trying to keep her out of trouble.. maybe she has mental issues and again he's trying to protect her. There's all sorts of reasons why he might not have pressed charges.. to assume it's because he's guilty of another crime is pathetic. It might be true but it might not be true. Try to make decision based on facts, not assumptions.

Ahh, we have a misunderstanding here Tangwhich

I was responding to Dewalt's post calling Ford a Habitual Wife beater, by pointing out for all we know, he (Ford) might indeed be the one who is the victim of spousal assault. I did not mean to imply Ford was a wife beater, or his wife is guilty of any abuse either, simply that we (public) don't have enough information to make that determination.

And maybe he is just an abusive wife beater. They look like the rest of us. Plus he has a history of assaulting others, she probably just gets in his way when he is drunk.

Indeed, maybe he is.. but in this country we're innocent until proven guilty.. if you prefer guilty until proven innocent then you should enter politics and seek that change. Until that happens, shut the hell up you ignorant dildo.

why is it ok for you to accept it when ford does it but you are intolerant when someone else does it? Try thinking for yourself.

What the fuck are you talking about?
I'm not defending ford or anyone else, I'm trying to get you to try some objectivity. Your complete hatred of that man seems to be blocking you from trying that. How about you just try thinking, full stop.

Hmm...Right. Harris covers up the fact that his government put the government $4.1 billion dollars in the red by selling off government assets. Thats what you call managing?

.
You obviously haven't looked at the current numbers recently have you. In September 2008 McQuinty recalled the numbers previously issued for 2007 and bumped the deficit retroactively to $5 billion plus. In the year ended March 31 2010 we were well over $20 billion . And you are still whining about something from 10 years ago when there was only ever one interested buyer? Wow

I don't endorse Smitherman. I just endorse anyone other than ford.
I see. I think this is helping us get to the heart of the matter.

As I said in another thread, Ford has his champions. Like him or not, there are people who believe he would be good for the city.

Can't say the same for Smitherman. I keep waiting to hear if anyone is prepared to explain their support for Smitherman's vision of more spending and higher taxes. So far, no one is stepping up. The best some can manage is that they'll take Smitherman over Ford, which is a half-hearted endorsement at best.

well in smithermans favour:

1. he was a drug addict
2. he has no hair or sense of humour
3. he mismanaged the min. of health
4. as a cabinet minister in the provincial gov't he did nothing for the city of toronto

LOL. I'm sure the Smitherman campaign appreciates your analysis of his, uh, attributes.
