The "Westernization" of Saudi Arabia continues. OBL must be turning over in his grave. Saudi women get the vote. Next, will they be allowed to drive cars?

They have the legal right to vote, now just have to wait for the social acceptance of that.

And ask for someone else to drive them to the polling station.

Seems to me like some window dressing to preempt social protests in Saud's land.

Yep, no coincidence that this happened the same year as the Jasmine Revolution. Doesn't mean it's not a major change.

And ask permission to their husbands.....by the way S.A. is an absolute monarchy so whats the point?
It's good news nonetheless. The elected representatives are allowed to decide some of the more trivial aspects of life. Maybe one day it'll grow into something more substantial.

As limited as it is, it's clearly a step in the right direction!

Wondered when this would be mentioned.
What is telling is that while SA makes it easier for their citizens to Vote, the GOP in the USA is hard at work making it more difficult for US citizens to Vote!...

In 2014 or 2015. Big deal. Can they drive, work, travel, unveil their faces? Primitive, medieval society and we have threads full of apologists for the entire region. Pathetic and sad.

You are right, it is pathetic and sad. SA is a backwards place. Hopefully women gaining the right to vote will be a step towards increasing their influence and say over their society, and thus a step towards ending some of those other problems.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "Medieval" because if you are honest women in Europe and America faced similar restrictions well into the Victorian era. It didn't really change for women here until they got the right to vote and started electing candidates who promoted their interests.

Plainly SA has a long way to go, they're a good 150 years behind us in terms of their respect for women, I'd say.

I heard 10 lashes. 10 is better than 50 but a lot worse than 0.

I always quietly laugh when I hear Muslims criticize the human rights record of the West. People in glass houses should not throw stones. Actually, they also stone women to death as well.

And when they arrive they will be allowed to vote for relative of the royal family A, or relative of the royal family B or puppet of the royal family C.

Saudi has a long way to go.

But...they can hire a car to get to the polls. There are not too many poor Saudis.

Or more accurately, the US has been a staunch ally, but risks losing the alliance by vetoing UN votes.
You think Saudi and the US will decouple over Palestine?

You are nuttier than I thought.

What! Are you saying that it would be the same as the female legal topless law in Canada? Legal but socially unacceptable?
Certainly possible, happened here in North American ,way back when voting was first allowed for women.

If they can't drive yet,and if it's true they need an escort that's just more barriers to voting.
