Saving Private Ryan ranks as the second worst fuck up in Academy history

5. 1980: Ordinary People > Raging Bull
4. 1964: My Fair Lady > Dr Strangelove
3. 1952: The Greatest Show on Earth > High Noon
2. 1998: Shakespeare in Love > Saving Private Ryan
1. 1941: How Green Was My Valley > Citizen Kane
1a. 1979: Kramer vs. Kramer > Apocalypse Now

.... the "last survivor" policy involved pulling the last survivor of a sibline out of combat. But this would be done by a memo to his CO.
In the case of the Niland brothers, it was believed that 3 of 4 brothers were killed (two in Normandy, one in Burma) leaving Fritz as sole survivor. However, the location of his paratroop regiment in Normandy was unknown after they were forced to jump away from the intended drop zone. So Fritz, like Ryan, had to be found to be removed from combat. The twist is that the brother Edward, presumed by the military to have been killed in a plane crash in the Burmese jungle, actually survived the crash and was imprisoned and tortured for more than a year until the end of the war when he was released.

The green paper armband was specially treated material which would change colour in the presence of toxic gas. The Allies were scared that the Germans would defend the beach-head with canisters of mustard gas.

When the gas did not happen, the troops shed the armbands.
Interesting!

While 2001: A Space Odyssey has some interesting elements its pacing
is so sluggish I can't comprehend how anyone can sit through the last
hour in a theatre.

Still, groundbreaking and audacious cinema that continues to influence to this day.

In particular, the production design has been 'replicated' in pretty much every single sci-fi film since it's release.

As important and influential as they come.

Admittedly I am very biased against 2001. I reckon Stanley Kubrick was a great director.
If there is a movie I have to watch 15 times without getting bored it'll be Kubrick's Barry Lyndon.
With 2001 the thing that bothers me most is his use of Blue Danube as the background music
for the spaceship docking sequence which I foundas distracting as it is corny. This is just my
personal bias as I understand that 2001 boosted the popularity of Blue Danube and Also sprach
Zarathustra. I am of the view that the film's artistry would have been elevated by the use of
Alex North's original score.

Between here and there.
Don't forget 1994. Forrest Gump is admittedly a fantastic movie and one of my favs. But Pulp Fiction is on another level, it changed moviemaking for a generation.

...and from that particular year - 1994 - I still maintain that The Shawshank Redemption is the classic to beat.

the beginning is wrong in at least one thing

they show soldiers being shot by bullets travelling under water

as soon as they enter water bullets begin to tumble

makes me wonder what other lies are in the movie for effect

I wondered about that also, since every CSI type show that does ballistic testing uses a relatively small water tank.

Still, the audio in the landing battle is absolutely amazing. The lossless DTS-HD MA track is state of the art and so much better than the standard DTS 5.1 1509kbps track.

I`ve seen the film at least 15 times and never had a problem, in fact I`d say the slow pacing in parts is essential to impart the incalculable vastness of the narrative. The film captures my imagination and gives me the chills like no other.
the symbolism is none ending

i see the black monolith representing beauty and art

it is the same dimension as a theatre screen

so the screen is the monolith and it is the viewer that falls into it and becomes rebirthed into a higher form through art(the movie is the art)

ordered it played at a truck stop

in a few minutes the theatre had cleared

same dimensions as a movie screen?

All the monoliths are black, extremely flat, non-reflective rectangular solids whose dimensions are in the precise ratio of 1 : 4 : 9 (the squares of the first three integers). These dimensions are the main source of debate about the simple external design of the monoliths. It is suggested in the novel 2001 that this number series does not stop at three dimensions.[1]

The monoliths are observed in several different sizes - TMA-0 and TMA-1 are both about 11 feet long and TMA-2 is two kilometers long on its longest axis, whereas the monolith that appears on Europa is considerably larger. They may be able to assume any size, because in 2010: Odyssey Two, the Star Child, created from the astronaut Dave Bowman, cryptically notes that the monolith is actually one size - "as large as necessary".

This was done for cinematic effect.

The TV show Mythbusters experimented with this and showed how bullets tumble and are almost completely ineffective after only a minimal amount of distance underwater.
