Here is the reason for the delay between seasons. Hopefully he will be okay.

Production on Season 2 of the hit Starz series has been delayed to accommodate the actor's treatment for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

LOS ANGELES, CA—Andy Whitfield, who plays the title role in Starz Original series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," announced today he has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and will begin treatment immediately in New Zealand. Whitfield discovered the cancer during a routine checkup as he prepped for the sophomore season. Andy's doctors have stated his condition is very treatable, and was detected in its early stages.

"I'm receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me," says Whitfield.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy," says Chris Albrecht, President and CEO of Starz. "His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time."

The second season was scheduled to begin shooting shortly in New Zealand, but has been postponed to accommodate Andy's treatment.

Great news! a prequel is in production this summer

NCTA Cable Show 2010 -- Pre-production is underway on a six-part prequel to Starz' hit original series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand."
Andy Whitfield, who played the title character in the series, will appear in the prequel briefly, but Lucy Lawless and John Hannah take center stage in this story of the rise of the House of Batiatus and its champions before Spartacus arrives as a captured Thracian slave. With the title still to be determined, the prequel will begin production this summer in New Zealand, and is slated to air on Starz in January 2011.
John Hannah returns as Batiatus, owner of the Ludus, along with his wife Lucretia, played by Lucy Lawless. Other returning actors include Peter Mensah (Doctore), Manu Bennett (Crixus), Antonio Te Maioha (Barca), Nick E. Tarabay (Ashur), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Naevia) - and others. New characters will also be added - most notably the gladiator who was champion of the House of Batiatus before Spartacus or even Crixus - who will help fill in the story about the people and politics in the House of Batiatus and ancient Capua as a whole.
Production on the second season of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" was postponed this spring to allow Andy Whitfield to be treated for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in New Zealand. His doctors indicate that the actor is responding well.

"The prequel story maintains the excitement and entertainment value of the first season of 'Spartacus,' giving audiences the engaging experience they've come to expect," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "We look forward to continuing the Spartacus story."
Produced by Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, Joshua Donen and Steven S. DeKnight, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" was the highest rated show for the 18-49 demographic among all cable networks for 12 of the 13 Fridays on which it aired based on coverage rating.* The production team remains intact for the six-part prequel.

Thanks for the update.

It will be interesting too see if they can pull this off considering we of course know the fate of the main characters.

They will probably have too double up on the nudity and violence if thats possible, lol.

Yes I read this a article a couple days ago. I was glad to hear as I have just finished watching the entire season. I too will look forward to this. This series has the greatest selection of fine breasts to be found anywhere. Including Lucy Lawless!

I watched about half an hour of the first episode of this series, wow the writing and acting were horrible!!! The dialogue was similar to something written by a grade 10 drama class, and that cartoony blood was just pointless. Does this get better??

so what you are saying is basically what I saw continues through out the entire series? If I wanted tits and ass along with sex scenes I will just watch porn, at least thats honest about what its trying to be. This seems nothing more than a soft core porn version of 300 pretending to be a great series like Rome, definitely giving up on this one.

One of my favorite lines: "hold your fucking tongues"
it's as if the local ghetto high school decided to try a Shakespeare style of theatre.

it does get better a bit
some sex scenes are somewhat thought-provoking, particularly those where husband fucks the slave in the presence of the wife.

Good News Andy Whitfield has a clean bill of health

Spartacus star Andy Whitfield has been given a clean bill of health and is already training for his return to the set of the Starz drama series. “I’m raring to go,” Whitfiled said in a phone interview from New Zealand. Fans will be able to meet the actor at next month's Comic Con where Whitfield will make an appearance along with other actors and producers from Starz's breakout series Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

Welsh-born Whitfield was diagnosed with treatable Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in early March during a routine checkup just as the show was about to start shooting Season 2. He began treatment immediately while production was put on hold. About five weeks ago, tests revealed that Whitfield was clear of cancer and three weeks ago, he completed his treatment. Whitfield, who thanked Starz executives for sticking with him and supporting him through his ordeal, has already started his own training for what is a very physically demanding role and will start vigorous boot camp training at the end of July.

While Whitfield was undergoing treatment, Starz announced a six-episode Spartacus prequel focused on two other characters from the series, played by Lucy Lawless and John Hannah. Whitfield will appear in two of the episodes and is expected to get in front of the camera sometime in October, giving him plenty of time to get in shape. (He notes that for the first season, he only had a month to prepare.) Upon wrapping the prequel, the cast and crew are expected to segue directly into filming Season 2 of the original series.

Whitfield shaved his head after starting to lose his hair during chemo but it is already growing back and he will have his trademark Spartacus hairdo shortly.

For 35-year-old Whitfield, the news of his cancer diagnosis came out of the blue just as the first season of Spartacus was breaking ratings records for Starz week after week and production on Season 2 was about to begin.

“After the initial shock – I was a healthy young man and had no idea that this could happen -- it was frustrating that the first season was ending on such a high note and we could’ve been rolling into season 2." But after that initial shock came “time to heal, figure things out and spend time with my family,” he said. And the experience has thought him some important lessons, like: “Stay in the now and enjoy every moment.”

Sad news for the fans of this show....

Andy Whitfield Leaving Spartacus

TV's Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield will not be returning to the Starz series for a second season, due to a recurrence of cancer that will require aggressive treatment, the network has announced.

"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved," Whitfield, 36, said in a statement. "It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey."

In March of this year it was reported that Whitfield, born in Wales and a resident of Australia, had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."

Wonder what the series producers are going to do.
You can't do Spartacus without the title character in it.
Might have to delay second season for a whole year to see if Andy Whitfield recovers or cast a new actor in the lead role.
Non Hodgkins Lymphoma has a 5 year survival rate of 69%.

Can't be good for Whitfield, i.e. he must not be doing well in his fight against cancer. If he was, he'd be back in the show.

Sad, very sad. He's such a young man.
