I watched the first episode - not impressed with the poor cinematography. Looked very cheap. They threw in tits to make it more appealing. Have not watched it since.

Great show. It is is like soft core porn. Great seen where Lucy Lawless character force a gladiator to fuck a slave girl. He finishes and they order him to do it again. Talk about pressure to perform.

Soft core porn may be a slight exaggeration but every show has nudity and almost all have someone having sex. And you did mention the orgy in the episode before last. On Friday the show began with one of the characters having sex with his wife. Again great show.

Even though you mention the tits and simulated sex - which is all good for us guys - there is plenty of eye candy for the ladies.
All the dudes are buff and there was one episode were there was the male full frontal nude. There was a pleasant and approving 'oh, wow' from the female audience watching with me.

Apparently in RL Ancient Rome, a lot of the gladiators were the equivalent of today's "leathermen" and there was a lot more than swordfighting going on in those training camps. Or, err, maybe I should say more than 1 type of "swordfighting"...... Err, you know what I'm trying to say.

I mean buff guys working out in leather jockstraps and dousing each other off when they get a little too hot. It must have been like a gay porn flick.

The trailer looks really good. Very much like the movie, 300. I'll wait for it all to come out on DVD though, so I can watch it all at once. I'm going to do the same thing with the series, The Pacific, and also the HBO Saddam Hussein miniseries.

Does the plot even get into the whole slave revolt aspect? Doesn't look like it from the trailer.

As for the possible homosexuality of ancient Roman gladiators, they were kept from women for the most part (with the exception of the use of brothels as rewards) so there's probably parallels with the homosexuality found in prison populations.

Yes at the end of season 1.
They are not shy about killing off characters *SPOILER* as they did with the Barca character last episode.
As for the whole show? Don't expect to much in the way of "historical accuracy".
They have apparently already signed up a season 2, to be called Spartacus: Vengeance, which will deal more with the actual rebellion.
Already started shooting in New Zealand.
Casting is a big secret as Andy Whitfield and John Hannah are the only ones so far involved.

gotta admit that I do watch it but it's bullshit nonetheless, in a year or two no one is gonna remember it

The slave and class wars of Ancient Rome make for very sad reading. This looks like a very sensationalistic mini-series, I have no interest in watching it.

Besides Stanley Kubrick had the final word on Spartacus. Here is the fight scene between Kirk Douglas and Woody Strode (the man who broke the colour barrier in the NFL).

This is clearly not an attempt at serious history. It's evidently aimed at the "300" fans who want to see more buff guys in CGI-enhanced fight scenes.
