Did you listen to the SOTU speech this evening? As a Bush supporter I thought he did a good job. Thought it was funny how many shots of Ted Kennedy shaking his head were broadcast.

Tonight the Toronto Maple Leafs (25-12-8-3) improved to 4-5-1-0 in 2004. Ed Belfour posted his 70th careeer shutout and continues to close in on tenth position on the all-time shutout list.

Oh wait ... the State of the Union Address was today wasn't it?

Boring...boring..

Dubya is going to win this election hands down...as long as the Democrats cannot elect a credible alternative to the incumbent. To my dismay, the Democrats are too "sissy" on the critical issues.

Personally, I am more a Democrat than a GOP on most issues except National Security and the War on Terror. If Howard Dean is going to win the nomination, the Democrats is going to suffer defeat worst than anything else since 1988 election.

It's kind of mirror image for the Canadian Alliance or maybe even the "new" conservatives.

I guess those "true" Tories are pissing as they don't have Canadian version of NRA in the west and the big shots at the Bay Street aren't generous enough to lavish them with money. Oil can't provide them enough "ammunitions" to defeat the Liberals.

As far as the speech itself, there is no need to flame more rhetoric. Everybody knows Dubya's bottom line and any inflamatory rhetoric is counterproductive.

Call him a bravedo but at least he delivers most of the time....except he and his peoples around him, including those "wise guys" are having big "mouths"

I liked the pan to Kennedy - nothing like showing how divided the US is. Anyways I was disappointed in the speech - usually you would expect some bold statements in an election year especially since he owns both Houses. If he goes the same old same old - he better hope Dean wins the Dems nomination.

W was hampered by a deficit - you can't announce new programs if you don't have money. I thought his delivery was much better than I expected.

Amazing what has happened with Dean and Kerry - we'll see how Kerry does out in front.

Do we start getting this, gas is up 20 cents in the last 4 weeks, someone didn't get the free oil memo.

Or have you fallen into that sad liberal knee jerk reaction that require a cynical response to everything.

One thing that surprised me when the applause when Bush said something on key parts of the patriot act expiring next year when he was arguing to reinstate it.

The quick look of surprise on his face was classic.

Cheers,

Perhaps the "trash the US dollar " policy of the current admin is more than offsetting supply issues. Oh ya , along with cold weather from Canada .

Here
Although I am a supporter of GWB, it was a weak speech that said nothing new and included nothing other than the required applause points. I love how he suckered the Democrats on the "Patriot Act is expiring" quote to get them to applaud..... only to follow up with "but terrorism will not expire on the same timeline" punchline.

Kennedy reminds me of Jabba the Hut.... or an old version of Eric Cartman.

How much of the deficit is his own creation ? If you count the Iraqis war as part of it you would have to say at least 100 billion .

Guess that vacation spot on Mars will have to wait a couple years . Would he still want to go if he knew you couldn;t barbecue there ?

I think the only one who has a shot at defeating Bush is John Edwards. Howard Dean looks like a madman, Clark can't form a position without handlers telling him what it should be, and Kerry has all the charisma of a tree.

A very boring speech IMO. I think I might have dozed off here and there.

It was nothing surprising. It is basic persuasive speaking 101. Emphasize your strengths, downplay your weaknesses and spin the bad in the best light possible.

It sounded to me W spent most of his time on the War on Terror and Iraq. No surprise here since these are the only "success" stories Bush II can take credit for.

Bush didn't spend hardly any time on the economy and jobs nor explaining away the 'jobless recovery'. I don't blame him. If he did cover it, it would provide fodder for countless soundbites that would be used against him. So why bother if you don't have anything legitimately good to say.

The outreach to the extreme right wingers near the end with the defense of marriage constitutional amendment was rich. I may be rusty but I think such an amendment would violate the equal protection clause of the constitution. That would be not unlike restricting voting rights to a certain class of people only.

I got the feeling the State of the Union was tailored to hit Howard Dean. Now that Dean is running third, the Dems are not presenting an obvious target.

I don't see a landslide for W in '04. I see another close contest with the country divided nearly 50/50. It would not be surprising to see some weird happenings with the electoral college vote this year as well.

Edwards has no foreign policy experience whatsoever and looks like he's about 12 yrs old, a longshot in my opinion.

Edwards is 50 years old. JFK was younger when he was elected president.

Edwards inexperience is what will hurt him more in my opinion.

And George Bush reminds me of that weasly guard (the short guy) in The Green Mile. Hides behind his family connections, and his position (that he got only because of his family connections) to push his weight around.......but if caught one on one in a room with someone who didn't care about his position or family connections, he'd be curled up in a corner bawling his eyes out and pissing his pants.

LOL. That's funny. All 4 of the guys you mention, no doubt, could at least carry on a conversation with their cabinet appointees. Blind man in a room full of deaf people? Clearly an insult to blind people. But that notwithstanding, Bush is falling like a brick. People are starting to finally wake up to this fraud.
