LMFAO
so true!

I saw today that the Packers are offering Favre 10 years and 20 million? That whole thing is more fucked than Sundin.. sans doute.

really its the media that is pressuring Sundin and making this a big deal. I mean if he isnt sure he isnt sure and he isnt letting the usual media pressure him into a decision. Im sure once he makes a decision he'll stick to it unlike Favre. I admire Sundin for sitting back and laughing at all the shit thats going on here while he sits on his dock fishing beside his hot fiance. remember he is a FREE AGENT and doesnt owe anyone anything. Its the clubs that are all worried and creating pressure. Im sure he's not sitting back thinking of conciously screwing the league or a particular club.

Ok, here's the plan. Mats will announce his "retirement". Then in March 2009, he will "unretire" and sell himself to the highest bidder heading for the playoffs. Works for Peter Forsberg.

Only one flaw in that theory ... Sundin says he never wants to be a rental player .
He said that in 2008 when he was under contract and had a no trade clause. Who knows about 2009.

I have a hard time believing that either the Leafs really want Sundin back for another year or Sundin really wants to play for the Leafs again.

With the clean-house approach Cliff has taken in rebuilding the Leafs, it would only ruin the Leafs' chances of finishing in a lottery draft position next year.

From Sundin's point of view, I don't think he'd like to play another year for the Leafs as it's quite obvious they are trying to finish last, plus it has been suggested that he was pissed by the way how the Leafs had asked him to waive his no-trade last year; Brian McCabe is one of his best buddies and I'm sure Sundin is not pleased with the way the Leafs have been trying to embarass McCabe by repeatedly suggesting that he would not be on the Leafs' lineup next year.

So, here's my guess on how and why things have turned out so far :

Fletcher must have approached Sundin and/or his Agent after last season ended and said to them " look, we're going in a different direction next year and have decided that we no longer require your service, however because of you loyalty and your long career with us, we'd do whatever possible to help both Leafs and you look good, whether you want to play for another year for another team or if you should retire."

Because Sundin was till unsure whether he wanted to play or retire, he and/or his agent said to Cliff : " OK, announce that you've made us a legitimate offer, which we will definitely not accept, but we'll just sit on it until Mats decides to play or to retire; this way, it will help Mats cause to receive higher offers from other teams and the Leafs will not be criticized for mistreating one of their longest serving captains.

Of-course this theory can be flushed down the toilet if Sundin signs with the Leafs again.

This is what I think Mats would do too. It would work perfectly for him:

1. Give him yet more time to determine playing versus retirement; Leafs versus other teams.

2. Make half of what he otherwise would by playing about a quarter of the games – less if he is smart enough to pick a team that doesn’t advance deep into the playoff. (To put things in the proper perspective: for most normal workers like you and me, this could mean some $5 million for 2 to 3 ½ months of work).

3. Not being tagged a “traitor” by “his beloved” Leaf fans for signing elsewhere since Leafs are not likely a playoff contender comes next March.

4. Tagged a die-hard “loyalist” by all Leaf fans if he signs with the Leafs (if the team is miraculously playoff-bound comes next March). Make some $5million by playing for 2 months since Leafs won’t advance deep into the playoff, if at all.

5. Become a hero with whatever team he decides to join if that team wins or close to winning the Stanley, and up his ante for repeating the trick for yet the next season. If that team flops, well --- Mats has said he doesn’t want to be a rental player cause he knows rental players don’t work. No harm done, he should still retain much of his value to repeat the trick for yet the next season.

It is a no brainer. LOL.

And Mats' long-awaited verdict is?

He should just RETIRE if he doesn't have enough heart to figure out by this late in the summer that he wants to still play hockey. that's my opinion.

I am a fan of Scott, and fully know that he is a weirdo. Sundin has clearly stated that he is 'not sure that he still wants to play hockey'... that should be answer enough.

On the other hand, Scott figured he achieved all that he desired to get from hockey... so who can argue that?! Neidermayer is right. he has rings, gold medals, trophy's, all star appearances and a shoe in to the HHOF.

what has Sundin got out of hockey? IMO he has unfinished business and if he doesn't know if he has the heart or not to be in it... that's just fucked IMO. he should just retire.

Mats Sundin has represented Team Sweden at various international competitions, such as the World Cup of Hockey and the Olympic Games, and has held the position of team captain for the national squad for the better part of the last decade.

Sundin is widely recognized as one of the top players in the world in these international competitions, and has added a highly impressive list of accomplishments to his credentials as a result of his outstanding performance in the 2002 Winter Olympics and 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
Sundin has won three IIHF World Championships with Sweden in 1991, 1992 and 1998. Sundin won a gold medal with Team Sweden in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Mats has also won a silver medal at the World Championships in 2003, and bronze in 1994 and 2001.

On October 11, 2007, in a game against the New York Islanders, Sundin passed Darryl Sittler as all time leader for career points and all-time goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Awards and achievements:

Achieved 500 goal plateau on October 14, 2006.
Achieved 1,300 points on February 5, 2008.
Awarded the "Mark Messier Leadership Award" in 2008.

It would seem Mats Sundin has accomplished quite a lot in hockey. The only major accomplishment missing in his resume is a Stanley Cup championship. Many great players have gone their entire career without winning a Stanley Cup.
He is a shoo-in for the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Nice list Geek..

...you can see the caliber of player Sundin is in the International Competitions..where he gets to play with some real wingers...not the slugs that Toronto has stuck him with for the majority of his career...and despite that, he still has some impressive NHL individual credentials...definitely a no- brainer for HOF...

to clarify, the HHOF is set up primarily for the NHL and IS the official NHL Hall of Fame. as it is titled, the Hockey Hall of Fame- it also will look at considerations of other inductees from outside the NHL for various contributions to the sport of hockey.

the HHOF only recently set up an international hockey exhibit as an answer to criticism that the HOF should not have an NHL only representation. So, though you are correct, GR, you can't dismiss the NHL's governance over, influence on, support of and dominance within the HHOF which is neither a good or bad thing.

We all know that Mats does not have a Stanley Cup ring. Are there any players in the Hockey Hall of Fame who did not play on a Cup winner at least once?
