Once in a while, tonight included, my 'puter boots up in "safe mode", indicating that the monitor settings are wrong. When I go to monitor settings I can't readjust the monitor to "high colour" 800/600. I'm rather 'puter stupid, any replies should be in plain English. Usually if I reboot a couple of times it fixes itself, but not tonight. Any ideas?
Thanks.

You may have to upgrade your video drivers.

What video card do you have? Or is it onboard? If it is onboard it will say in your manual. If it is a separate card, you can look on the card. Either way you can also find out by looking under window control panel, under system, video or graphic adapters.

You won't be able to adjust your video settings in safe mode as this is a diagnostic mode and gives you limited flexibility. It definitely sounds like a corrupt video driver however.

Just a word of warning though it could be any number of corrupt files which causes windows to boot into safe mode.

What version of windows are you using? You might try booting from the windows cd and then selecting repair this windows installation.

You also may want to go to www.microsoft.com and update all your windows files. This is a good thing to do frequently as they are constantly upgrading windows as security breaches are found.

There is also a command, used under your start menu, run, type in sfc/scannow and make sure your windows disc is in your cd drive. This command reviews your windows files and makes sure you have all the correct DLL files in their correct places.

Fem, that takes you INTO safe mode, not out of it.......

Cutter, it has been a while since I used '98 so I'm a little rusty, but you can still do the auto update at www.microsoft.com.....that's the first thing I'd do as well as update all the drivers for all your equipment (cd-rom, dvd drive, video and sound cards etc.).

reboot and repeatedly hit the f8 button as it restarts.
Why? His computer is "once in awhile" already booting in safe mode.
What's the point of F8?

Or he can uninstall, then reinstall his video drivers, assuming he has the CD's for it still.
Also may want to check for trojans, or any form of malware period.
AntiVirus alone won't cut it.

CC: you're right, but even if you dont' have the cd's you can get most of em off the net.....

I keep forgetting that even ATI itself reccommends that you uninstall your current drivers before upgrading.....
