Senator Jean Beliveau

He is a hockey legend, a Canadian icon, and a trustworthy politician as well (despite the obvious oxymoron of such a statement). If we were to replace the Queen with a president, Beliveau would be a good first I think.

More Than U Want Me to Be
Off the top of my head ....

Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby for forcing the official recognition of women as persons in Canada in 1929

PET for tons of stuff, but in particular for actually starting the process that created our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the most inclusive, forward thinking, and honourable human rights legislation in existence (if not the only one to extend these rights to all persons in Canada, not just citizens). Started in 1960 with the introduction of the Bill of Rights, ended in only 1982 with the constitution law that is our Charter.

Henry Morgantaller for putting his body on the line for women's rights when we couldn't

The Canadian government that had the respect to apologize to the Japanese for their internments in Canada

I really could never give such an honor to a politician, no matter what you say, they're all crooked as a three dollar bill.

Ben Johnson. Just ekes it out over Iron Mike Sharp. How could I forget him.

Joni Mitchell might not be everyone's cup of tea but she is universally critically acclaimed and has been an enormous influence on artists of all genres worldwide. I still like Neil better.

A couple of other musical icons recognised internationally are Oscar Peterson and Glenn Gould.

Slightly down the scale would be Guy Lombardo and Stompin' Tom Connors.

Joni Mitchell's first few albums were amazing. I think her smoking eventually wrecked her voice though. Her writing also went downhill, I think as a result of focusing on technique instead of outcome.

Greatest Canadian - Good Ol JC.

No Doubt - Jean Chretien. who has more accomplishments than this great man.

He was a liar, a thief, narcissist, a cheat and a *****. How many men can boast having achieved so much in one lifetime. Oh and I forgot a complete Moron.

"A proof is a proof. And a Good proof is good because it is proven"

How about Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone. Just think about the impact of his invention and the offshoots, the phone, the fax machine the internet etc.

As do the British.

It’s a real testament to Canada’s mediocrity when after 136 years of independence, mere athletes and pop stars top the list of greatest Canadians. Sad.

Here
Sir Frederick Banting.

Not as flashy as Dr. Bethune but contribution to the world, let alone Canada, was and remains tremendous.
