Miami, you dumbass
Need your advice, techies.

Sometimes I log into TERB at work. While I'm always clearing my history, is there any way throught the network they could track my surfing history??

Again, I'm not looking for a rant against porn and all that crap at work, Just want the hard truth from a network tech. :)

Thanks,

JH

Absolutely they can track your history and long after the fact. They will still be able to tell in April what sites your computer visited in February.

Clearing your history helps prevent someone WHO IS CHECKING FROM YOUR COMPUTER where it has been but the router logs at the server will still have that info.

Don't surf terb at work.

On your work PC, they can very easily see every place you surf even if you clear the history.

Doesn't your work computer have a filter that stops stuff like TERB, Facebook, MySpace, Yahoo, etc.? I tried logging into TERB once and got this nasty popup: "You are attempting to access an unauthorized site. Do not do it again. This is now on your record. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED."

If they are doing things right, all internet traffic is logged by the firewall going in and out.

And it could be used as grounds for termination if they ever need to can you.

Use an anonymous proxy... That's the only way you can shield yourself but most networks will block em.

Yes they can fire you.

At our place all employees were warned and told work PCs are for work only.
They also got the: "You are attempting to access an unauthorized site. Do not do it again. This is now on your record. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED."

A couple workers thought they were 'too important to be fired' and ignored a couple warnings.
They were fired.

Are they able to see your Terb's user name and password and actually see what you've posted on this Board ?

Is there any difference for computers where you have to logged in with a user code ? Can they tell what sites each individual user has logged onto ?

The basic underlying assumption you should be making is that they can find out everything you're doing online.

The general, day-to-day security might not catch everything but once they see something out of the ordinary there's very little you can do to prevent them from finding out what you're up to via dedicated monitoring.

And the bigger the company, the more assets they have to throw at internet security.

Above all else, avoid porn (or TERB!) at work.

In this economy, don't give them an excuse to fire you. In 2009, the workplace is a sterile sexless humourless place. (I worked at a company that actually had a no hugging policy.) Keep your nose to the grindstone, do your job and then go home.

My non-for-profit company is pretty slow, IT-wise. Is there anything I can do from my PC, that removes all traces of my internet travels?

Never did porn at work, but terb, xxxxx, redzone....etc...

Thanks,

This site doesn't use SSL, so "yes, they can".

Make no mistake, the IT folks can track every single move you make online.

In my office, I often have to do online research and occasionally end up with one of those warning screens that says something like, "You are trying to access an unauthorized site," even if the site is completely innocent. So I log it and inform IT. (This happened once when I was researching, of all things, rain barrels, and one of the sites was blocked because the word "sex" was used somewhere in the site. I have no idea why sex and rainbarrels would be connected...)

My GF and I have sex in the rainbarrel all the time, especially after a Summer thunderstorm. Just kidding!

Jan, this probably means you are dead meat. Better to voluntarily confess now before the It police knocks at your office door.

If you have an always-on connection at home (DSL or cable) it's not hard to access your home pc from work via remote desktop or VNC. Basically you can then surf any site and the only traffic to your work pc will be encrypted images from your home desktop - very unlikely your company will snoop on that. This is what I do for porn, torrents etc.
