Personally, I think they're overdoing it with the Tornado warnings the same as they do with the amber alerts.
Let me know when a tornado is on the ground or when there's an amber alert within 200km of me. I don't need an emergency alert to tell me a tornado is merely possible or that some miscommunication between estranged parents means a kid went "missing" in Ottawa.

I understand your POV. However, I'd rather be bothered by an Amber alert if it helps avert a tragedy. As for the tornado....if its on the ground, it's probably too late for most to get into shelter. The warning, at the very least, can help people be aware of the weather, and be alert if things start to change (i.e. wind picks up, storm clouds are nearby, etc.). Not sure how much notice is helpful, but having an understanding that conditions are right for a destructive storm could make the difference between someone getting caught outside or making it to a basement...

And we fall for this every single thread that is posted.
I understand that POV as well, but worry the excessive use will trivialize these warnings. I received two such warnings just for the storm yesterday, and they were ineffectual in imparting important knowledge. They basically informed us it was storming with the possibility of tornado, something we already knew from looking outside.
And I've yet to receive a single amber alert for anything within 250km of my location.
These warnings should be a HOLY SHIT THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN MY BACKYARD, I NEED TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION moment. But I imagine most people are dismissing these warnings by now.
Where did that kissing cousin thread go, there were some good replies. Maybe more importantly were there not some fables regarding passwords and accounts being taken over. Why is this being allowed to happen? Threads don't go as they want ..... poof, gone. Sad, very sad state!
Same old story, things get called out and poof deleted. I'm not trying to be a prick but sometimes the truth hurts. Can honestly smell the BS from a mile away.

That is totally understandable regarding the tornado. What else can you expect after 8 solid days of rain. Didn't someone say Doug Ford had called out the army to help sand bag to prevent the devastating flooding?
They already can target specifi areas but there's reasons they don't.
1) Many of these abductions are custody battles which means the cops have to investigate legitimacy first. So by the time that investigation is over the range on which the kidnapper could have moved is much larger than what it was on initial report, which by itself can be much later than when it actually occured. Like if you were expecting your kid home at 7 or 8 and they got kidnapped at 3, guess what you can drive pretty far in 4-5 hours.
2) kinda still fits into 1 but there's already been situations where kids were found much farther than anticipated.
For example 1 kid abduced in Sudbury was found in Toronto.
By your metrics that kid would not have been found because people in Toronto would not have been warned. And here's the thing would YOU like to be the one that makes that call?
3) Privacy the more "targeted" something is the less privacy you have. To target an area you have to ping the area.
some people are even going as far as asking for the alerts to only go to people who are "active" which would mean the system would have to check your phone first.
Which means giving up more privacy.
