Having recently gone through the Building Permit process in Toronto, I now sympathize with this Toronto couple.
It took me 3 months to get a zoning review.
Then it took 3 months to get a variance
Then it took 6 months to get a building permit.
That's just slightly more than a year of complete and utter bullshit. BULLSHIT.
The province of Ontario legislates that municipalities must either accept or reject Building Permit applications for houses in 10 working days. It takes 6 fucking months with the City of Toronto.
Here's how it works (for a building permit, never mind the variance, and the Committee of Adjustment - which is this fucking kangaroo court).
1. You submit detailed drawings to the Building Department. (After you wait in line for 2 hours). At the time, they tell you 4 to 6 weeks. Fair enough.
1A, You find out that you have tree issues - so you have to do a song and dance there. You end up having to build this enclosure around the tree in the boulevard and give them detailed plans of that, AND a $2,700.00 deposit in case you kill the tree during construction.
2. After 6 weeks, you start calling, only neither of the 2 individuals reviewing the submission answer the phone. One guy's mail box is full and he never answers the phone. The other guy - you leave a voice mail and he NEVER calls you back. Not ever.
3. After 4 months, you get a letter in the mail with 2 or 3 issues on your drawings - in my case windows on the side of the house and an underpinning detail.
4. You resubmit Immediately.
5. You don't hear anything back.
6. You start phoning again. The odd time buddy answers his phone, he tells you that he will get to it when he gets to it.
7. You phone his boss, it gets you nowhere.
8. After 6 months, you get your permit.
6 fucking months.
They should all be fired. Every last one of them.
