Everyone deserves compassion. That has nothing to do with fulfilling the requirements of the law and the rightful expectaions of the neighbours and other citizens who did do as the law clearly required. Having repeatedly and blatantly ignored or denied all the many possibilies and avenues for doing things aright, this couple, and their lawyer daughter who owns the home have exhausted any claim for legal, administrative compassion.
They're now down to, "Wuzza, wuzza, poor babies." at least until they come up with a petition from their neighbours up, down and around the block, saying they all believe the zoning and planning laws should be waived. Which would still leave the matter of the Building Code, which should not be. But if they took out liability coverage for the neighbours on whom the addition might fall, and posted a bond to ensure it was demolished before any sale was completed, then I suppose compassion could reasonably extend to allowing the couple to end their days there.
But that is asking a lot, for people who've shown no respect for others.
