Trump Would Rather Deal With Carney

We do not know exactly what was discussed between Carney and Trump behind closed doors do we ?
In the photo op after the meeting Carney did perform well in front of the cameras to the extent that he rebuffed Trump’s annexation plans and that Trump remained more or less civil.
Unfortunately for Canada, I expect Trump to hit the Canadian economy with another potential devastating tariff or economic constraints within days to show that his machinations have not changed.

The duo of Smith and Trump working on Carney and more importantly the rest of Canada will drive the Canadian economy into recession this year, and if America goes into recession as well, Canada will degrade even further.
The growing uncertainty about the extent to which Alberta will dance around sovereignty will continue to shake Canada to the core.

Smith knows that Carney cannot match her demands and that the deal that Trump offers for Alberta might look increasingly more appealing very soon.
The spectre of transfer payment dependent Quebec getting a haircut is increasing now.
Blanchet was correct in saying that Canada is an artificial country and Quebec and Alberta with their respective relationships with Ottawa continuously prove this. Canada is a federation of provinces with a weak central government with Quebec never having signed the constitution and Alberta circumventing the constitution. As such an opportunistic foreign plunderer like Trump is able to exploit this flaw and weakness in Canada towards annexation.
Except the support for AB separation is well below 50% and there is no way a WEXIT is going to practically happen.

I see where you're coming from, but I think you’re overstating both Trump’s intent and Canada’s vulnerability. Yes, the U.S. is a superpower, and yes, Smith’s posture toward MAGA politics is concerning. But that doesn’t mean Trump is in a position—or has the bandwidth—to “carve up” Canada. His admiration for Carney after their meeting suggests even he recognizes a serious counterpart when he sees one.

As for Carney being “pummelled” by Smith—let’s be real. Smith has made herself a very loud domestic critic, but volume doesn’t equal impact. Carney is staying focused and measured, and that contrast is becoming clearer to voters who, for the most part, are proud of his performance yesterday. I even heard right-wingers like Lisa Raitt praising Carney's performance along with Dougy.

I disagree that Pee Pee has been sidelined unless of course, he were to lose the next Bye-election, which is highly unlikely. I suspect going forward we will see a much more easy-going, less attack-dog styled Pee Pee.
I think there is a looming issue for the CPC involving a schism between the Western Trump-lite ding dongs like Smith, Moe, Scheer and Pee and the Eastern centrists like Duggo. The fact that asshole, fool-oid loser Scheer was made interim house leader suggests that the Western clique still runs the party. But you have to ask how much longer this is going to continue.

There's no logical reason that Scheer should have been re-uploaded to a leadership position, except for his connections and clique placement.

Smith has significantly reduced the threshold for signatures for referendums in Alberta including those on succession.
If Smith gets a referendum on joining the USA, the consent of the rest of the provinces would be required but this clause can be altered or circumvented.
MAGA Trump wingman are attempting to bribe or buy off Alberta First Nations at present to get them on side.

Trump could conveniently recognize the bogus results Smith’s successful referendum charade and employ the US military to occupy Alberta, or at least portions of it.
The Vichy Trucker Convoy types in Alberta would aid the US forces .

no you do not think
that much is clear

The fact that asshole, fool-oid loser Scheer was made interim house leader suggests that the Western clique still runs the party. But you have to ask how much longer this is going to continue
.

it will continue until Perrie P is elected in the Battle River-Crowfoot bi-election

it is surprising that you do not understand what "interim opposition leader" means

Actually had Canadians know the full truth about Justin Trudeau in 2019 , Andrew Scheer would have been Prime Minister and we would not be in the current mess.

now pay attention
a properly functioning parliamentary democracy requires an opposition and an opposition leader.

Credit is due to Mark Carney for accommodating the bi-election & not playing the political game the moron Trudeau would have

It depends on the notion that the Americans will be sweet to Alberta. Texas will dictate the cost of energy to Alberta, they'll become a satellite of the State. They'll probably be treated worse, they abandoned a model democracy. And forget about looting the CPP, they'll just use that money to subsidies the oil industry.

Trump should join Shaq and Chuck's Fat Ass Wrestling, Andrew Scheer should become Ambassador to India.

Let me leave this here for you and I will highlight a few of the key paragraphs because I know you will not read it. BTW. do you know where Carney is from?? Just asking for a friend.

"Most Albertans, according to a May 1 poll by Ottawa-based Nanos Research, believe that staying with Canada would be better for the economy. Only 1 in 10 respondents said that the province would be better off as part of the U.S."

" But leaving is not so easy as voting in favor of a referendum. Canada’s constitution does not allow unilateral separation. Following the unsuccessful referenda on separation in Quebec, the federal government enacted the Clarity Act in 2000 on how to approach future referenda on provinces seeking independence from the country. The act stipulates that the national parliament’s House of Commons determines if the referendum on a province’s independence demonstrates “a clear expression of a will by a clear majority” of the provincial population. Once determined, the provincial government can then negotiate with the federal government to amend the Canadian constitution to potentially allow its secession. "

"

Shortly after Carney’s election, the Prime Minister met with Smith, who wrote in a post on X on May 2 that the two discussed measures regarding Alberta’s economy “and specific proposals for projects and legislative reforms that will significantly increase market access for Alberta oil and gas, agricultural products and other goods.” Smith described the conversation with Carney as “a positive first step.”

Carney replied to Smith’s post: “We’re both focused on bringing down the cost of living and increasing opportunities in the energy sector for hard working Albertans. I look forward to working together—to break down interprovincial trade barriers and to build one strong Canadian economy.”In her recent statement, Smith said that her provincial government will appoint a negotiating team to address those policies. She also said she will chair an “Alberta Next” panel, which will hold a series of town halls, to hear from Albertans about what they want for the future of the province."

"Smith clarified that the Albertan government will not push a vote on separating from Canada and that she personally does not support separation, but she asserted: “If there is a successful citizen-led referendum petition that is able to gather the requisite number of signatures requesting such a question to be put on a referendum, our government will respect the democratic process and include that question on the 2026 provincial referendum ballot.”"
I told you last week: how does he convince Quebec to take in more immigrants, and how does he convince Alberta to finance Quebec?

It's right in your face but you still can't see it. For Carney to have a shot at success, he's going to need provincial unity. Trump has strings in place to make that a really difficult process.

It's more than just Trump's tariffs, but/and it's the tariffs as well.

Just like Trudeau was the wrong guy in 2015, Carney is looking like the wrong guy in 2025.

Slow learners will understand in due time.

Desi, you crack me up! You seriously didn’t catch how Trumputin was giggling like a schoolgirl after his little pow-wow with Carney? I haven’t seen him that starstruck since he mistook Macron for a Bond villain.

Carney walks out of a closed-door meeting and suddenly Trumputin’s blushing, fixing his tie, and calling him “a very strong, very smart man” like he's pitching him for The Apprentice: Ottawa Edition. And you still think he’s the wrong guy? Come on, man.

You’re stuck in 2015 like it’s a political Groundhog Day. Let it go, Desi. The rest of us are living in the sequel and spoiler alert: Carney’s got the lead role for the next 3 or 4 years.

Your optimism about the Carney and Trump first live meeting is refreshing.
Apparently though, Trump only has fear and admiration for Vladimir Putin for whatever reasons ! At this meeting yesterday, there were no unpleasant outburst and no gains for Canada.
Watch Trump hit Canada with some sort of economic unpleasantness again in a few days resulting in more major economic damage to Canada similar to the 700 job losses at GM in Oshawa , the Stellantis closure or worse and see how Carney reacts.
Quebec’s aluminum and copper industries are reeling as well as many nameless small businesses and supply chains across Canada. Quebec will require augmented transfer payments due to Trump’s damage which will play into Smith’s grievance narrative
I don‘t believe Carney or anyone who would have become PM can do much if anything about changing the ongoing negative Trump effect on Canada.
Negotiating with Trump is an oxymoron in terms.
Watch for Carney to travel back down to Washington again soon as Trump attempts to play him like a yo-yo.shades of his approach with Trudeau. And then there is the Smith problem.

Obviously, there is a Smith, Moe and Trump trifecta working in favour of annexation and destroying Canada in its current form.
This might explain Trump’s somewhat cordial reception of the impotent Carney as Trump reiterated “ never say never”

I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump’s been feeling the heat lately — between tanking approval ratings, CEOs quietly (or not-so-quietly) sounding alarms, and GOP higher-ups flipping out behind closed doors. The pressure cooker’s on, and even Trumputin knows he can’t keep steamrolling without consequences.

Over the next few months, watch him start hunting for off-ramps to walk back some of his more unhinged policies — and now, with Carney at the head of Canada’s table, he’s actually got a credible grown-up to deal with. That’s a game-changer. Let’s be honest: trying to walk back chaos with Justin still playing the earnest schoolteacher or Pee Pee cosplaying as a libertarian podcaster that even a make over can't help wouldn’t exactly inspire confidence in D.C.

Carney, on the other hand, gives Trump the illusion of a “deal,” a win he can brag about, even if it’s just him backing away quietly from another bad idea. And if Trump’s going to treat our leaders like yo-yos, at least now we’ve got someone who knows how to cut the string.

I wouldn't bet on Moe in Trump's pocket and I suspect Bitch Smith is upset Trumputin isn't treating her like he is Carney.
Like I asked: How does he convince Quebec to take in more immigrants, and how does he convince Alberta to finance Quebec?

If you can't answer why Quebec has their own rules but can't sustain themselves, don't get too comfortable.

Carney knows this too. Why else is Charles coming to Canada? Why do you think he's calling for unity between provinces?

Trump can sink Eastern Canada with Tariffs and shower Western Canada with cash.

Separation or not, major damage can be done regardless.

I like your optimism about Trump taking a shining to Carney but I don’t like your naivety.
You could be correct that Trump is now down trodden from his global tariff actions and wishes to make a “ bromance “ with Carney to allow Trump to claim a diplomatic success. However I think you are wrong unless Trump quickly drops the tariffs against Canada and MAGA backed Smith retreats in her attacks on the Carney Federal Government
Trump’s machinations are not his beliefs and desires but those oh his base which he is primarily beholden too and not Carney.
Trump doesn’t care about Trudeau or Poilievre’s characters as you mentioned. He only cares about annexing Canada.

Fair points, Lomo, but let’s not confuse cautious optimism with naivety. I don’t think Trump suddenly woke up craving a Carney cuddle. The man doesn’t “do” diplomacy unless it involves flattery, leverage, or a photo op with a thumbs-up showing off his fake tan and yellow hair.

However, even if Trump’s motivations are entirely transactional, which they are, Carney is uniquely equipped to play that game. He speaks the language of markets, power, and ego, all of which Trump understands very well. That doesn't mean the bromance is real, but it might be functional. And right now, functional is better than flammable. At the very least admit Carney did a great job for his first meeting as most have agreed on, even right-wingers.

As for Trump being beholden to his base, absolutely, his MAGAS are complete fools and twats, but even his base starts to squirm when jobs vanish and prices spike. That pressure trickles upward, and at some point, even Trump needs a scapegoat or a soft landing. Carney gives him the option of the latter without making it look like a retreat, which, ironically, is the kind of “win” Trump likes best.

Annexing Canada, though? C’mon man. Trump couldn’t even annex TikTok.

Listen to what comes from the mouth of a Trump loyalist called Kudlow. Perhaps you will believe him instead of Squeezie.

If you notice Trump has not appointed anyone with the sage advice as Kudlow for whatever reasons.
So who is advising Trump to do the things that he has done since his inauguration.?
Trump was not elected to make nice with former allies like Canada .
Trump is still weaponizing the Canada USA economic trade agreements and backstopping MAGA Smith towards fragmenting Canadian.
For example, Trump has caste a deep gloom, foreboding and actual panic in places like GM dependent Oshawa with what appears to be large scale permanent job losses.
Hopefully, Trump will soon throw Smith under the bus, but maybe not as she is increasingly emboldened for some reason.

I think you’re giving Trump a bit too much credit for strategic coherence here.

The idea that there’s some grand plan to fragment Canada or weaponize trade in a coordinated effort with Smith feels more like a Bond villain plot than the reality of a guy who often governs by impulse and cable news. Kudlow might be gone, sure but let’s not pretend he was some economic Yoda either. The man once said deficits don’t matter and then blinked while markets melted.

As for Smith, Trump likely doesn’t know her name, let alone care enough to backstop her on some master plan to balkanize the Canadian federation. If anything, she’s trying to ride his brand for her own domestic politics, not the other way around. Trump throws allies, enemies, and random interns under the bus depending on what he had for breakfast. Smith’s turn will come the moment she stops being useful to his narrative (or he hears she’s from Alberta and assumes that’s a suburb of Vermont).

Trump didn’t get elected to “make nice,” but he sure loves looking like a dealmaker. Carney gives him that opportunity. That’s why the gloom in Oshawa might start to lift and not because Trump got kinder, but because he's desperate for a win that doesn’t involve indictments or golf carts.

Did you catch his big announcement today? It looks like he's backing away and next it will be with China. Canada and Mexico will be fine with Carney's steady hand and knowing how to handle the POS called Trumputin.
