Wow, the contempt and lack of compassion that some people have on this board for others is amazing. I still say you should be a great friend and let them live their lives, no matter how short they might be. It isn't the length of a life that is important, rather the breath and depth of it. And if you want their lives to be fufilling, just be a wonderful friend and treasure the time you have with them. Enjoy what you have today and miss them when they are gone. Because in the end we will all be gone.

If it hasn't been mentioned already....
Only one guy I know that can help...Harvey Brooker. He's here in Toronto and runs a Sunday morning mens group. I've been, dropped 45 lbs and have kept it off. I've seen very large men turn their lives around there. Most men I knew there had lost upwards of 100 lbs and were still dropping. One guy had dropped 175 lbs...amazing transformation. Google him...best thing you can do for your friends is get them to climb the stairs to his meetings on Sunday.

what makes you think they care about how you look? are you god's gift to eyesight?
if they are active and overweight they obviously are able to function. appearance may be important to you but might not be to everyone. somehow everyone in our society feels the need to tell someone else how they should look and what they should do. Canadians are an incredibly arrogant bunch of pricks.
Actually, most societies stigmatize fat people. It is a sign of greed and laziness. It is a defect in Canadian society that we tolerate fat people as much as we do. If there was more shame in being fat, many people would avoid becoming overweight in the first place.

Of course they would. That's why there are tons of fatsos in the rural areas and less downtown. That's why French Parisian women look so good. Peer pressure. Sometimes it's for the best.

I never say anything to anyone. I have to admit, I look good physically. Just had a guy today, a stranger, say "hey to you work out." A month ago, some 20 something said "are you a coach." because I am in shape. I get it from women, BUT MEN? And I don't excercise. My point being, they always bring it up with me because of the shape I'm in and I feel guilty/strange that I can't relay what I do. Which is nothing but be myself. Of course I don't have a wife and kids to pile on the stress like they do.

They want you to be fat. Like them. They feel that people are staring at them when they eat. People are. I don't stare. I look away. It's disgusting.

The first thing that you might suggest is a very thorough comprehensive health assessment. Some of the suggestions are a little simplistic as there could be a combination of issues involved here.

Diet is not just counting calories (actually diet soda and margarine are terrible for you) and eating vegetables. It can also be the types of foods your friends are eating and how they are affecting their internal chemistry. It is quite probable that they have hormonal imbalances but it is difficult to determine exactly without blood analysis. For example they may have a deficiency in Vitamin D. Vitamin D is known to speed up the metabolism that is good for weight loss. A visit to a naturopath could be of assistance. A cleanse could determine what the impact is on their diet. Probably too much sugar and gluten.

How are they sleeping? Naked, regular sleep hours, cool room, total darkness, no distractions are all helpful with sleep. A good sleep helps with weight loss.

How are they eating - small meals throughout the day as opposed to large ones increase metabolism.

Are they hitting the weight room. Many people think that cardio is a good way to lose weight - it is but part of the weight lost is muscle. Muscle burns calories and increases metabolism - therefore developing a weight program could have a beneficial affect. You as an athlete have a more developed metabolism then your friends - that is why you can eat more.

These are only a few items. But one thing is clear - your friends should not start a diet or serious exercise program without consulting a doctor and there may be more to this obesity than just being fat.

In your happy place
Get their stomachs stapled. I've seen it work.
If they are interested I did a webisode on a surgery called Slimband....the doctor answers all the questions about the procedure and you see one of the people who actually did it and looks fantastic now.

There is nothing fulfilling about being bedridden as a result of obesity.
