I watched a few of the prelim fights on Sportsnet tonight...boy were that interviewer and Dana White so irritating.

GSP did what he needed to do, do something each round to take them and ride out his eye injury. i suspect it was more serious than it appeared. The only round even close was the last, but by that time it was in the bag.

Hominick (sp?) was nuts to continue, that hematoma was insane and imagine Aldo connecting with another elbow or punch on it? Not worth the title, sorry.

As for GSP/Shields, Shields looked confident for the first minute and after that looked like a child fighting his Master Teacher. lol
I wonder how much better it would have been had GSP not had his eye messed with.
Sure GSP didn't do as well as most would have liked, but Shields did fuck all with an obviously injured fighter standing right in front of him. lol

If GSP fights Silva, he'll lose...and I'm not a big fan of Silva's either.

Thoughts on last nights card:

Shields fared a lot better than I thought he was going to. Eye injury aside Jake for the most part stood in there and showed greatly improved stand up. I really hope that GSP does not have a detached retina for that could be a career ending injury.Dana sounded interested in a Diaz/GSP matchup in the the post fight presser. Diaz would be a formidable opponent and would be a great fight.

Homonick's forehead was something to behold. My god he looked like the elephant man out there. He showed a lot of balls though standing in there until the end and dominating the fifth round. Aldo for the first time looked beatable during stages of the fight.

Cotoure went out the hard way on the wrong side of a knockout. Let us hope that he sticks to his word and retires. It was a great ride while it lasted.

Henderson was to much for Bocek on the feet and scrambled well enough to stay out of Mark's sub's. Henderson has a lot of possibilities ahead of him in the UFC.

A 12 million dollar American gate, wow MMA certainly has come a long way.

IMO, Aldo didn't look beatable at all and I was rooting for the Canadian.
All it takes is one lucky punch or something to turn things around fast and that's no way to win - at least not if I was fighting, I wouldn't like it.

Never heard of Aldo before but holy shit is he good.

FACT is, GSP never allowed Jake to control the fight, he never allowed Jake to take it to the ground, he COMPLETELY outclassed him in the stand up, AND WAS FIGHTING WITH ONE FUCKING EYE FOR THE LAST 3 ROUNDS AND CONVINCINGLY BEAT A FORMER CHAMPION.... yes Shields was a big competition for GSP and the judges made the decision.

I agree with Joe Rogan.......
Shields looked bewildered and confused for the entire fight.
How one judge could give 2 rounds to Shields is perplexing.
Greg Jackson interview on SherDog after the fight says it was a poke not a punch that hurt his eye.
GSP basically fought 3 rounds with no vision in his left eye and still Shields could do nothing.

Hominick is a tough SOB but his corner should have thrown the towel. No need to risk serious brain injury.
Aldo looked beatable as he gassed seriously in the last 2 rounds.

Couture was outclassed. Period.
Machida looked good. Ghosts of Shogun exorcised?
The crane technique? Did the Dragon train with Mr. Miyagi? "No can defend crane".
You had a legendary career Randy please retire for good.

Brilz is a chump. Vladimir got lucky. Neither are going anywhere fast.

Henderson did enough to win. Good GnP. Bocek looked weak and lost.

Loved watching Diaz get punked by Rory. I despise both Diaz brothers. Love it when they lose.

Makdessi's spinning backfist KO is an instant classic. Where is Shonie Carter when you need him? LOL

I haven't seen the older Diaz in a while but I don't remember he being as much of an @ss as NAte. Nice watching Rory "rag doll" Nate Diaz over and over. That "rag doll" move had "bitch" written all over it. Rory didn't have to say a thing.

Shields will have to deal with all the GSP nut huggers, but he'll still submit the arrogant frenchman.
arrogant is the last thing I'd call that guy. GSP is the epitome of a martial artist. He's always respectful of his opponents , and usually he's the one that has to deal with the trash talking of guys like Hardy, Serra , Koscheck , all of which got their asses handed to them by a better fighter that still didn't say shit even after he kicked their ass.

The Diaz brothers , Lesnar , Tito Ortiz , those guys are arrogant.

I also agree with others about Couture , he's a legend , and at this point he's just gonna get hurt. Nobody wants to see that happen to him. He's a true inspiration, like GSP , of what martial artists should be.

Thanks to The Oracle, our resident link provider, for the following link, where all of the fights can be viewed for free, without even downloading software: http://www.mmashareforums.com/serious-mma-videos-f35/

I haven't watched all the fights yet, but can offer the following humble opinions:

1.) Thanks for the memories Randy. Time to retire. I'm not a big fan of his style, but no question he is one of the greats. Its amazing that he has stayed in the Octagon as long as he has. Loved the knock out.

2.) GSP did what he had to do. I think his eye injury prevented him from dominating more. Shields clearly lacked the ability to win this one, even with GSP injured. Yes, GSP is not the most exciting MMA fighter to watch. Exciting doesn't win titles every time. At this point in his career, he is so talented that he can face any fighter in his weight class and exploit his weaknesses.

3.) Loved the McDonald-Diaz fight. I always get the 2 brothers confused, but I gather its the other one, Nick, that is the more talented. Nice to see an up and coming Canadian kid do so well in front of the largest MMA event in North America to date.

Imho, Gsp is just an insanely well conditioned, well rounded, smart fighter. The guy will expose ur weakness, in the shields fight, it was standup. everytime he fought somebody he had a strategy and gameplan and he can customize because he so flexible at adapting, however, it is somewhat boring to watch, because he does the samething once the weakness has been spotted. I noticed that he did the over hand hook to attack. Against koschek it was the jab. The question is now, if he fought somebodly like anderson silva how he will adapt because silva is just so natural and i would say more fluid and more muiti dimensional than gsp. It would be interesting to see who would win. I think silva has an edge of surprise over gsp, he seems to have an ace up his sleeve all the time, which i dont think gsp has. Just a thought.

It would seem that even Jake Shields got some jabs in on GSP and everyone agrees that his standup isn't great, so I can only imagine that Anderson Silva would have his way if GSP tried to stand toe to toe with Silva. GSP would obviously have to go to his wrestling take downs and he'd probably be successful just like Chael Sonnen was,....up until he got submitted.

Maybe Silva should come down to the welterweight division to change things up.
Why people insist on GSP moving up is beyond me, those guys are a bit bigger, and a bit goes a long way in MMA.
Silva is 6'2, Pierre 5'10, those 3 inches alone would play quite a factor, let alone the weigh class difference - 15lb difference in weight.
Still, Silva would be commanding in physical presence alone.

My hats off to Rory and Hominick showed what a true warrior is all about, he has to get fight of the night bonus. Hominick won over allot of fans that night.
I give Randy the utmost most props for wanting the Dragon fight even tho I knew Lyoto would make him look bad. Not much fighters would want to take on the Dragon since he is difficult to hit and can put you to sleep at any given time. I know Randy doesnt have the greatest record but I respect him for taking chances and wanting to challange himself against difficult opponents. Don't forget this is the guy who wanted Fedor back when he was unbeatable and went up in weight to KO Tim Sylvia.
