Let me give you an example of how badly I think the Tories failed.
I follow a Twitter account called "The Secret Barrister", which is written anonymously by a Brit trial lawyer who gives accounts of how the legal system is collapsing from under funding and neglect. The SB relates that it now takes 5 years to go to trial for rape in the UK. In Canada, the maximum delay legally permitted for a serious criminal trial is 18 months!!
Labour also complained about the under funding and delays. And the Tory response was to attack Starmer for being a "terrorist sympathizer" for once defending an accused terrorist back long ago when he was a criminal court barrister. The SB engaged with the Tories spoks on this and pointed out that barrister ethics actually didn't allow Starmer to decline a client based on the client's character and political views. The Tory spoks deflected, mocked and hooted.
It was disgusting and typical of the last Tory government. Incompetence. Arrogance. Lying. And empty rhetoric.

Voters in almost every Western Democracy are fickle. It all depends how the Liberals govern. They can't take anything for granted. Nor should observers take their future success for granted.
Just look at the Continent.
An impossible job made much worse when David Cameron introduced austerity measures during the tail end of the subprime meltdown. And don't get me started on his obstructionist agenda toward the EU. Like Michael Bates said in A Clockwork Orange, Kier Starmer has inherited "a right brutal bastard" of an economy. At least he has a hot wife.
