Redundancy is safer. If only one hand is steering and something happens to knock it off the wheel… Where are you driving that two hand turning is too slow? A demo derby?Yoga Face said:Explain why you need 2 hands on the wheel ?
That is a remnant of days when you did not haver power steering
Why would you use hand to hand turning ? it is too slow

No need to get insulting oldjonesoldjones said:What you, O Perfect Driver, really have to worry about is the Other Guy—this is just one of many threads about how dumb he is—and two hands on the wheel give you twice the chances of one when he does something stupid and hits you.

That's not exactly true, you have to loosen your grip to move the hand positions in order to complete the hand to hand turns....unless of course you have spaghetti arms that can twist around with the wheel......oldjones said:Hand to hand always has two hands on the wheel. Redundancy again; it's safer.
C'mon everyone, let's get back on track here. So... someone was saying how those slants are real whack jobs behind the wheel...tboy said:That's not exactly true, you have to loosen your grip to move the hand positions in order to complete the hand to hand turns....unless of course you have spaghetti arms that can twist around with the wheel......
Check this out - crazy! Amazing no-one crashes.opieshuffle said:...but probably the best visual explanation. Apples and oranges comparing driving in North America to some other places. Helps to explain why we perceive so many from other cultures to be completely insane with their driving.

Op
From watching mythbusters, when the airbag deploys with your hands at 10 and 2 your arms are forced up and out... not towards your head. (This seems right to me as when I'm driving 10/2 my elbows are not directly below my wrists which is where they'd need to be to get popped towards my face)tboy said:I actually heard that with the advent of airbags it is now 9 and 3 to keep your arms out of the way of the airbag when it deploys. 10 and 2 would force your arms up into your face.
The point of palm to palm is that you are always holding the wheel, even if you are letting it slide through one hand so you could grab ahold of it faster than going hand over hand.tboy said:Palm to palm is RETARDED. Hand over hand creates a smoother quicker fluid turn not in segments......but, again with airbags, the hand over hand could be a thing of the past.
one good reason I hadn't seen posted yet...Yoga Face said:Explain why you need 2 hands on the wheel ?

LOL you're reading my mind dude. This is why I don't signal until I'm ready to actually do my maneuver. It is getting to the point where it is like the other drivers think: hey if HE wants to be there there must be something better to had by ME being there so I'm gonna be there first! When I activate my blinker in flowing traffic it's to signal a lane change -- It is NOT a request for you to accelerate into my lanespace. No wonder so many people change lanes without signalling.
This is true, BUT I would like to add: if you are in the lane that has to merge, and the vehicle next to you is slightly ahead of you, go BEHIND him, not in front. Since the written rule of the road is that the vehicle in the travelling lane has right of way over merging traffic. If I am approaching a sudden lane closure and signal a last minute lane change, let me change lanes. Do not accelerate and trap me. Thats a 'dick' move and eventually I will reach a point in my life where I have stopped caring enough, or simply snap and cut you off for spite at yours and my own peril, likely maiming or killing us both.
