The pendulum swings too far back...
Most ads these days see fit to belittle one of two things:
1) The male figure in any male / female interaction, and
2) the parental figure in any parent / child interaction.
The first count has become rampant.
I can honestly say that if ads were to suddenly reverse to belittling women as badly as they currently belittle men, there would be a public outcry to ban such material!
How these ad firms get away with this as being 'acceptable' is mind-boggling.
Males are portrayed as dumb lummoxes who can't make an intelligent decisions for themselves, and are always outsmarted or 'one-upped' by their female counterparts.
Now I'm all for portraying a strong female character, but does it have to so often be at the expense of the male character?
I'd probably be okay if it were once in a while, but its almost every other commercial these days!
Some will say that commercials of the 50's, 60's & even 70's were more pro-male and belittled the female character, and I would agree.
But I think that since what's been deemed as 'acceptable' (read = 'gotten away with') in terms of televised content these days has broadened considerably, the ad firms have used this to push the envelope in an effort to get one's attention in a world of ADD!
The result is ow a set of unacceptable content as ads on TV.
When you then couple all this with the ads targeted at teens, with the teen character outsmarting the parents on every level, it creates a twisted sense of reality to the younger viewer, and nothing more than an annoyance to the majority of other viewers.
