Mike Babcock meets with Detroit GM Ken Holland Friday to renew his contract which expires June 30th. Who will Babcock sign with?

I say he stays in Detroit.

Since nobody here has any inside info all we can do is take wild guesses.

I'll say Magnitogorsk of the KHL.

The Insider Bob MacKenzie said Babcock has to talk to his family, if the family doesn't want to move, expect him to stay in the Detroit. Sometimes family happiness trumps over money.

Tough call If Toronto offers a ton, but have to lean towards staying in Detroit too.
Detroit will offer whatever Toronto offers and more, The Leafs won't win a bidding war. Plus as stated earlier his family will weigh heavily on his decision not to mention the Wings have a lot of young talent in Grand Rapids and they've always had a good bunch of scouts.

Interesting speculation on Chicago as well, given how Quenneville and Bowman don't talk. If that happens, I'd be all for Quenneville coming to Toronto.

There is no salary cap for coaches, just budgetary. And I think almost any team looking for a coach can afford Babcock. Detroit might match Toronto, but Edmonton also has a rich owner, a new arena (which Detroit soon will have as well) and McDavid. I think odds are he stays in Detroit though.

Miami, you dumbass
He's never built a winner - all the talent in Detroit was in the pipeline when he showed up.

And we all know that Toronto does not have the talent pool in the system that Detroit does.

He's a coach, not a GM. His job isn't building a winner. What we don't know is what his aspirations are in regards to management.

You say that and we have a president of hockey operations who has never built an organization

You are a funny guy Saxon.
Do you believe your bullshit or is it just for public consumption ?

Whether or not the Leafs are even on Babcock's serious list or not remains to be seen, but if it came to who would offer the most money Detroit is not in the same area code as Toronto.
Babcock may stay in Detroit for family reasons as mentioned. He could go to another NHL team.
But regardless of where he goes it will not be because the Leafs were outbid, if Shanny wants him and has a green light to do whatever it takes and Babcock would come, he will be the next coach of the Leafs.

I am aware of how much Ilitch is worth, about what Bell/Rogers paid for the MLSE package.

Wrong again.

Mr. Ilitch's net worth as of January 2015, ~$4.2Billion

Bell/Rogers bought the MLSE package (75%) for 1.32Billion,
that would mean 100% of MLSE was worth ~$1.76Billion

I'm from Detroit area, and I think he's going to Toronto. He's already won in Detroit, if he can win it in Toronto, he would be a God! In Detroit he is kind of taken for granted. I mean hockey is 3rd in Detroit, it goes Lions, Tigers then the Wings and Pistons last. When the Pistons were rolling in the late 80's, the Wings were dead last in popularity. So why not go to Toronto and be the big fish.

The appeal to coach Conner McDavid...but in Edmonton? Had Toronto won the draft Babcock's decision to coach Toronto would be way more tempting. Plus more top end NHL stars will want to play for Toronto. But keep on dreaming :frusty:

There is also the risk of becoming the big flop if he doesn't succeed.

I'd love to have Babcock but I don't like the idea of hiring a coach before you hire a GM.

Why would Babcock sign with Toronto when he doesn't know who he'll be working under ? Unless you let him have a say inwho's going to be the GM, or maybe Ken Holland is also coming to Toronto....

What GM would not hire Badcock ? Although I agree with you ie hiring GM before coach ( remember Fletcher hired Wilson before he hired Burke ) and how did the turn out ?

I think Badcock maybe a bad hire for the Leafs at this time ...

You would have too .. He has a big ego and anyone who they hire as a GM will have a coach who thinks he knows more then them and would have hard time .. Holland is a great GM and had produced a trust factor of the coach ..
