Microsoft said it is selling the Home Premium Upgrade Version of Windows 7 for 49.99 until July 11/09 in the United States. The regular price once the product is released in October is 129.99 for the upgrade Windows 7 package.

------

Quote:
"Microsoft said it would sell the Home Premium upgrade version of Windows 7 — which most non-business customers already using Windows will want — for $49.99 from Friday until July 11 in the United States. The discs would be shipped after general release.

After July 11, the pre-order price will be $119.99, 8 percent less than the current $129.99 price tag for the comparable version of Vista, which cost $159.99 at launch in early 2007.

The Professional upgrade version of Windows 7 — aimed at small companies using multiple computers — will be on sale until July 11 at $99.99, then at $199.99 afterwards. The comparable Vista version is the same price."

Does anyone know if you can get this deal if you live in Canada or are you out of luck? And if so where do you order from, Best Buy, the web somewhere?
I have a computer with Vista that I'd like to upgrade to Windows 7 for that cheap price.
Thanks for any info re. Canada.

I have a question though:

Why would you want it?

You know it will be full of bugs, not work properly, give you nothing but headaches and probably crash your system......

I like torturing myself.
In any case the Vista system will be fully backed up onto a different hard drive so I can swap out drives and go back to original Vista system if I'm not happy.

Actually to be honest, its a decent OS. Not fantastic but a much more stable environment than Vista.
I get better performance with it a well.
as for security issues, time will tell. Being that Windows is still the largest used OS, its also the biggest target.

I am hesitant to say something like "Microsoft did something right"
but i will say they are at least on the right track. ( or a better one.)

And before I get flamed for saying that from mac users or linux user or the like...
I run windows 7
Vista
Xp
Mac Os X
and ubuntu
all pretty much equally

One other thing... i had low low low expectations for windows 7
"more of the same" "pretty but not practical" etc etc
I am pleasantly surprised with 7...
and that is something i never would have thought i would admit.

I would be in as well for the $49.99 if it's avail in Canada. Website says check back on the 26th to get full details on which retailers are offering it. I hope that if BestBuy US carries it then BestBuy Canada will too, only makes sense.

Don't care how wonderful other O/S's are. I personally need a Windows platform, and like or not, 7 is the future as far as Windows O/S goes. For an O/S I want a legit license so the $49.99 is a great deal. My fave XP will die eventually.

My take on Windows 7 so far is that it isn't any worse than vista, and in fact in many ways is much better and offers better performance. There seems to have been a nice big cleanup under the hood, which has gotten rid of much of the buggy code and removed most of the obnoxious stuff that was just eating processor for nothing.

Apple users that have seen it actually even like it, although they jealously say it's just copying their Macs.

Most reports claim Win 7 is a nice improvement over Vista.

Not sure if I'll get Win 7 but the intro pricing is tempting.
Very happy running Ubuntu and Vista and XP for the little I still use M$.

well they did! ;)
Ha
Actually with the opportunity to run both my mac and my windows 7 boxes side by side its a nice chance to compare.
It is pretty obvious that Microsoft has borrowed some concepts from the Mac Os but more importantly they have borrowed some security concepts from the unix/linux world
to be fair though so did Apple.

Its the first windows OS that i have used that i would actually feel OK about paying for.

Yes and no. In the case of Windows, the genuine validation thing is annoying enough that I'll pay to get a legit one. Prior to my current Vista PC, I always installed warez but kept having to find ones that worked when new service packs came out. applications sure, but O/S forget it, i'll pay. Linux is free with no license headaches, but it doesn't run what I want so unfortunately can't use it.

P.S. Just pre-ordered Windows 7 from futureshop!! Don't care what anybody says, I'm looking forward to it!

Hobbyer, you have a good point. I will take most things from torrents except the operating system. Also look into portable apps. And linux on a usb stick to go. Yes you have to go into the bios to change boot sequence to usb. That should leave you with a clean/clear mind, if your worried about the origins of some of those jailbroken apps. Black xp/vista I would use as a slutbox not a prim machine. If they broke through the os, would you trust that machine to do your banking etc.

Exactly. I have a spare computer sitting around that I want to setup as a torrent/warez/slut, i.e. shady biz computer. Probably even use linux for it since it's free and don't need any windows only apps. But I'm not going to take any chances on my main computer that I use to produce work that puts food on the table. No screwing around here, not gonna get denied an update that's critical for my application because of genuine validation. For example, my work VPN is very specific in what it supports for remote access. No substitutes and help desk can't help you if you use warez and thus can't install a patch, you'll be SOL.

I'm running the free RC version on my netbook, runs pretty well. Its what Vista should have been.
