Anyone know or suspect when Windows 7 will hit the market.

I'm in the market for a new laptop and I don't want to buy one now only to have Windows 7 hit the market, then have to buy the upgrade to get away from Windows Vista.

I saw in the Globe and Mail today that MS has Windows 7 Beta out for test purposes. How long usually before it gets released???

An article I was just reading stated 18 months, that would be consistent with the roll-out of Vista.

Googling suggests a target Release Candidate late this year, with Ready-to-Manufacture as early as December. Odds are they'll slip, but probably not more than three months.

Depends on who you believe, but the earliest you'll likely be able to order a computer with W7 is early 2010 and most IT professionals would recommend you wait until W7 gets SP1.

If you need a laptop to tide you over til then, you might want to look at a 'netbook', they're cheap ($500 - $600), light (2 to 3 lbs), and usually ship with XP or Linux (not Vista).

They're more than fast enough to surf the web, run Office, and post to Terb :D

I wouldn't play games on one though.

Screens and keyboards can be a bit small so you should get some hands-on experience before deciding, but they are pretty popular these days.

Just thought you should know there are some options out there.

The Beta version is available to download now - it expires August 1 - from all indications it is the realease candidate as well - informed sources say the general release of the final version will be around August 1 as there will be a lot of pissed off people when the Beta expires -
From what i am hearing Mac boys are are being tempted to go back to Windows based on the W7 Beta.

So far Win7 Beta is getting great reviews.
The Beta version runs good with few bugs and is FASTER than Vista.....perhaps almost as fast as Ubuntu....:p

Not to be left out Ubuntu is doing an upgrade this april, to beat both MS, Win7 and Mac, Snow Leopard upgrade release dates.

The new Ubuntu 9.04 to be called Jaunty Jackalope will be out this april.
.....and yes, unlike MS & Apple, Jaunty Jackalope is still FREE!

Snow Leopard removes all the universal bloat found in OSX and is faster ... much faster .... i have a laptop running it since the Developers release went to anyone with a Developers account.
Well Vista aka Longhorn was suppose to come out in 2002 ....... when was it released? .... 2006 after the original attempt was scrapped and went bak to the drawing board.... no one told B Gates that the file system the were trying to develop was a dud.

Ok if you haven't tried Win7 yet don't get all to overly excited. It's VISTA with a few tricks up its sleeves. There are major glitches trying to run virtual disks, and other problems with current installer outright bombing out. I will say the hesitency in networking and connection to the net is all but gone which is about time. Tge biggest gain I see is support for backups, which will be needed if the first edition of VISTA was any indication. BUT with a little more tweaking and all the beta inputs Microsoft actually has a chance to turn this around. As for release I would HOPE they will take their time, debug it properly and release sometimes in 2011. If they rush the release party like Vista part I it will just be full of holes also. So Yes I like the "new" windows, but it is no screaming hell, performance is almost slower truth be told. Just my 2 cents:p

but if they are true to form that we should add on a 12 mth delay when trying to figure out the release date.
They've lost alot $$ ... therefore, it would be in their best interest $$ to release it on time .... and before people (A.K.A. Big corporations) lose their temper!

Apple, on the other side, is doing their best to get their new OS out BEFORE MS.

All 3 big players ... Ubuntu, Apple and MS are busy tweaking their OSs without adding anything new or exciting. So, all 3 should be able to meet their target dates AND it's going to be one hell of a fun year .... for us ... GEEKS :D

What? Read any review and you'll see it's faster than Vista and in most cases faster than XP. Reviewers have it running on 800 MHz netbooks with 512 MB of RAM.

I don't know why people would be upset. MS clearly states that the beta will expire August 1.

Win7

A few people are trying out Win7 on their laptops in our office.
So far, it was validated that it was indeed faster than Vista, and even Xp.

Cisco VPN compatible, biometric fingerpring reader compatible even...

AVG is compatible too (don't ask me the build number being used... I didn't jump on the band wagon myself just yet... )

By the way - I also hear the rumor Win7 will be free for current Vista owners... That would be the phase out plan for Microsoft to eliminate Vista [so they would not have to maintain support for Vista]. Like every rumors... you can't believe them until or when you see them. (just like that rumor that say it might be released this summer [2009? really?])

[Version 7? Does that mean it's Win 2007 delayed/stalled for 2 years??? LOL]

From what I've seen so far though... it is indeed an improvement over Vista.

My 2 cents worth...
Good night!

--> forgot to mention: There is apparently a feature to define swap space [or memory expansion] to a USB key instead of the HD for better performance! That I thought was a clever idea. Anyone agree?

<edit closed... again.. Ciao!

ReadyBoost was introduced with Vista. It "adds" RAM, not HD space. It never really took off due to the widly varying read/write times with USB sticks. That combined with the cheap cost of RAM now days means it's more of a novelty than anything.

Latest on W7 Beta

Windows 7 public beta end date named

Two-day wiggle room

By Gavin Clarke in San Francisco • Posted in Operating Systems, 26th January 2009

You've got just over two weeks to download the Windows 7 beta from Microsoft, as Redmond starts winding-down the public testing process.

The Windows 7 team has blogged that you have until February 10 to start the process of downloading Windows 7. Testers who have started, but not completed, the download process on that date will have until February 12 to finish the process - a testament to the fact that Microsoft's download infrastructure has struggled to keep up with demand.

Microsoft will continue to make Windows 7 beta product keys available after the February 12 date, it said. Also, veteran subscribers to MSDN and TechNet fear not: You'll be able to download the Windows 7 beta after the February 12 cut-off the company said.

No matter who you are, though, the Windows 7 beta will cease to work on August 1, according to reports.

It's been just over two weeks since Microsoft officially threw open the Windows 7 beta at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Microsoft has said it's ending general availability of the beta because of demand. "We are at the point where we have more than enough beta testers and feedback coming in to meet our engineering needs," the company said.

It's likely Microsoft received more feedback than it needed given Windows 7 is a less ambitious work than predecessor Windows Vista and was considered largely feature complete by Microsoft when released this month. This means that unlike with the Windows Vista, Windows 7 testing was a tire-kicking exercise rather than an acid test for major new capabilities.

Based on the Windows Vista code, Microsoft's Windows 7 focus has been on tuning up performance and simplifying interface and navigation. ®
