The way you completely fucked up a cavalry army was with conventional stone and mortar fortifications. The Byzantines fucked up Attila and the Huns by fortifying Byzantium. Worked perfectly. So the Chinese response was cost effective and proportionate, even if huge in material terms.

No surprise that Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore are in the top 5. When it comes to mainland China, bear in mind that most of the population is rural. Doesn't mean that rural people are dumb but they might not be the best candidates to score high on IQ tests.
