and that means what?

I wasn't talking about the Russian ARMY.

These particular 12+ brigades get better pay, more holidays, the best equipment, better accommodations and they get out earlier. Consider as well, this one arm of the Russian forces is bigger than most countries' front line troops.
I want to do more reading about the Spetsnaz and the role that women play in it. Where should I begin? What source for your statistics were you quoting in your original reply?

The information stated is easily found on the internet, just do a search. My comments were based on first hand conversations with people who know these things, having spent some time in Eastern Russia and Siberia. The one female officer I've met was a dive master for a project in the Anadyr/Kamchatka/Chukchi Regions.

Ponder this: A former SEAL in command of a task force of coalition SOF in afghanistan considered the Canadians as his top guys, even over SEALS. The US currently has more dudes wearing the Special Forces Tab than Canada has in its entire Armed Forces.........
The conclusion is obvious - CANADA IS GREAT, and America will always be welcome living in our basement!!:canada:

Among the SOF groups in theatre, the have more in common with each other as elite operators than the fat tubs of goo in their own militaries.

if you can meet the requirements than you should be allowed in or at least given a chance to try.
They could save manpower - I think one armed bitch on PMS would rain hell on the terrorists. Of course she could rain hell on her team mates too !

Danger and secrecy inherent in special ops missions test strength of families at home

ByWarren PeaceStars and Stripes
Published: May 11, 2011

STUTTGART, Germany — Rob was having lunch with his wife, Lauren, and friends at California Pizza Kitchen, when his phone rang.
After a short conversation, the SEAL with Naval Special Warfare Unit 2 immediately left the restaurant and didn’t see his wife again until he returned from a mission a few months later.
That was several years ago, and she still doesn’t know where he went or what he did.
“It was almost cheesier than the movies,” said Rob, whose last name is being withheld by Stars and Stripes for security reasons. “I got the call at lunch and was gone before dinner.”
However, those no-notice deployments are pretty rare.
“There aren’t too many guys on call 24/7,” he said.
That could change, with news that senior officials at the White House and in Congress are considering a new special operations-led model as the way ahead in Afghanistan.
Special operations forces, which make up less than two percent of the U.S. military forces, tackle missions with a higher level of security. The details surrounding the killing of Osama bin Laden by SEAL Team Six, for example, might never be fully disclosed. Those missions, and the high secrecy that envelop them, affect not only the servicemembers but also loved ones, who are left behind with little information.

The families of all troop operations live with fear, craving every crumb of information they can find about their deployed servicemembers, whether through military channels, Facebook, email or other outlets. Special operations families get less information.
For special operations forces, ranging from Army Special Forces and Rangers to Marine Force Recon to Air Force Pararescue to Navy SEALs, there are no public welcome home ceremonies, no crowds to sing their praises. Even if their missions, such as the raid in which bin Laden was killed, become public, the troops and their families remain anonymous.
Since most of those in special operations forces are recruited from within the services, the average member is older and has a larger family unit than those in other military occupations, according to Special Operations Command Europe commander Maj. Gen. Michael S. Repass.
Family stress can be such a force, Repass said, that he warns married servicemembers not to make the decision to join the special operations forces selfishly.
“It has to be a family decision,” he said. “I could probably talk you into coming into SOF. I can’t talk you into staying, if your family is not happy. If your family is not happy, you are going to walk. That’s just a statement of fact. Until you have that conversation with your spouse, it is not worth you coming over.”
Many special operation forces families have adapted and learned to deal with these limitations, but they are not alone.
“I have never had such a good group of girlfriends as I do now,” said Rob’s wife, Lauren. The couple has two children.
“We are all going through the same thing, and you don’t have to talk about the details,” said Meredith, whose husband, Brandon, is a Green Beret from the Army’s 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group.“”I can just call a friend and say, ‘’I’m having a sad day,’ and she says, ’OK. Let’s cry,’ and you don’t have to talk about what you’re crying about. You just cry.”
Many wives worry about what happens during extreme missions, and how it might affect their mates.
“I worry that he’s going to come home completely changed, but not realize it,” Meredith said.
“There is a lot of information and preparation for cases, such as injury or death, but there is not any way to prepare for each individual’s frame of mind when they return. Thankfully, we have been blessed with good re-integrations and have seemed to jump right back in where we left off.”

SEAL team worried identities will leak
By Kevin Baron
Published: May 12, 2011

WASHINGTON – The team that killed Osama bin Laden told Defense Secretary Robert Gates last week that they are worried that their identities will be leaked. The secretary is not happy.
“Frankly, a week ago Sunday, in the Situation Room, we all agreed that we would not release any operational details from the effort to take out bin Laden,” he said. “That all fell apart on Monday, the next day.”
During a town hall meeting with Marines at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Gates said threats against U.S. troops have increased since bin Laden’s death.
As a result, there has been a “consistent and effective effort,” he said, to protect the identities of the team – widely reported to be the Navy’s SEAL Team Six.
“I would tell you that when I met with the team last Thursday, they expressed a concern about that, and particularly with respect to their families,” Gates said.
Gates added that the military was looking at measures to pump up the security around them.
