I'm disappointed to see Stajan go. I still remember his first goal.

A few years ago, I expected that Colaiacovo, Steen, Stajan and Wellwod would all mature and have good careers as Leafs. I hope that things will work out better for Luke Schenn than it did for those guys.

The team hasn't had any success with developing young prospects in a very long time. Wendell Clark is the last one who comes to mind.

Dissapointed??? Stajan had no skill or speed .... 1st line on Toronto, 4th line on any other team in the league....I'm very glad he's gone....Thank you Burke!

Somewhere
Don't forget that with Phaneuf in now that he'll be the young stud on the blue line for the leafs, taking a lot of pressure off of Schenn who could still turn out to be gold. Plus the monster, the leafs could have 4 pretty key pieces to go on for years to come.

Except Tomas Kaberle has a No-Trade Provision in his contract.

As of today 31/01/10, Kaberle has not requested a trade, and Burke says he will not ask him to do so.

Kind of makes his expendability moot, no ?
Kaberle's no trade option wil not apply in the off season, so if he wants to have some say in where he ends up with, it would be better if he gives a list of teams to Burke as he did last year. In the off season he will have to go whereever he's traded to.

Publicly Burke doesn't want to get into the same situation as Fletcher did with Sundin as that would give the team a bad name to attract free agents; but it's so painfully obvious that the team needs help upfront and who else is better to use as a chip to get that front line centre as Kaberle ? Burke paid so much to get Kessel and I'm sure he wants to get a play maker to play with Kessel so that trade would not look bad on him.

I wasn't talking about the offseason.

K Douglas said it would make Kaberle expendable at the trade deadline.

My statement is accurate, and I stand by it.

Good luck Matt Stajan

Matt Stajan was one of those local guys (from Mississauga I think) who grew a Leafs fan and got his dream. He just seemed like a really good kid and truly understood what it meant to wear the Leaf uniform. You knew something was up when he took the ceremonial face-off against the Canuckleheads, kind of a final honour for someone who would appreciate it.

A lot of Stajan haters but it wasn't his fault he wasn't a number one centre and that's where they played him. You can tell from his interview the poor kid is crushed - he didn't even mention Calgary until someone had to ask him about going there.

Dion was just as sad in his interview. He is in a similar situation where he was from Alberta and literally grew up with the Sutters who were father figures to him. Hard day for young players who leave the only team they ever played for but then again, they're freaking millionaires so boo hoo.

Hopefully Dion will take all that emotion and take it out on the opposing teams.

Regarding the trade itself, Calgary takes all our "good" or "team" guys. You gotta think the Calgary dressing room is toxic and that's the main thing they needed to change. Primadonnas, like Tie Domi excel in Toronto so I have no doubts Dion will flourish here too. I don't think they should name him captain, though; they should wait until next season and then decide (just in case Marleau signs).

"Character" players are a dime a dozen (sorry to be so blunt). When one can't skate, can't score and can't play defense, one becomes a "character" player (Mike Peca, Shane Corson, etc.) or a goon.

Congrats on trading some flexible assets for a vastly overpaid dumbass in Bryan McCabe,,,, I mean Dion Phaneuf.

In the NHL the team that takes on by far the worst contract easily loses the deal. Great deal for the Flames.

We also get a young 6' 5" defenceman in Keth Aulie who was good enough to play on Canada's world junior team and is rated as Calgary's 3rd best prospect
IMO he is the real deal and we will see him playing in Toronto sooner then most think.

OMG Toronto must have 600 defensemen by now.

The TV woman said that Toronto gave away two of their top two scorers this season but a top two Toronto scorer is probably no better than middle of the pack on any other team.

[QUOTE
=guyroch;2967794]Why does everyone want to trade Kaberle ???

How else can you get a first line centre to play with Kessel ? Most of the good passes you see from Kaberle are passess out of his own end zone but when the puck is in the offensive zone, he's just a very average player. He's a good D to have but you have to give up value to get value in area (offence) you need help the most.

Kessel no talent? wtf?

Burke has been consistently trading for beligerance and Truculence.... as if with Blinders on...
Did he not notice last night that it was Hockey Talent.... ie Sedins... who kicked the Leafs ass after being down 3-0
Yeah, "consistently trading for belligerance and truculence": that sure describes his biggest acquistion. I think of Kessel when I think belligerance and truculence...

Talent wins ..... Kessel is not talent...any body can come in and take a ton of shots..if he had talent he would score on more of them
Another gem: Kessel is not talent. A goal scorer with lots of speed = no talent in your eyes? Have you ever watched a hockey game?

Bottom line is Burke wants HIS kinda guys... and the Leafs will spend years in the cellar..... with hmm...... No Draft Picks(thanks Burkie) to show for it.
I dont mind the trades.... but they gave up a bit of little bit of offence they had..... they are further behind the 8 ball in that sense....
Phaneuf has been chastized by the Calgary fans and even the coach said he was a big problem in the dressing room....
Burke looks on with blinders and will smile the first time Phaneuf nails someone coming over the blue line.... even though the Leafs will lose the game.
does that count as a stat to get the Leafs into the playoffs... or does what the Sedins/Burrows did count...?

Burkie - get the Leafs some real talent.... you are a big time failure as a GM so far in my eyes
Unfortunately the first parts of your comment damage your credibility in the somewhat intelligent part.

It does sound like Phaneuf has some issues but you can't get a talent like his without some qualifications or else he would probably never be available.

Time will tell if Burke has a plan and it will pan out. Looks a little grim now but at least he has added a couple of difference makers. Now he has to give them a supporting cast.

got rid of some disease in the dressing room (Blake) for even more (Phaneuf)...

but, my biggest concern is that they got underperforming players (Phaneuf, Giguerre, Fredrik Sjostrom) for guys that were some of the best contributors on the leafs (Hagman, Blake, White)
hey, isn't this the same risk JFJr once took by taking underperforming Raycroft??

if the play of Giguerre, Sjostrom, Phaneuf outperform that previously by Hagman, Blake and White then I think it was a good trade and worth dumping Stajan, Mayers and Toskala because they didn't seem to fit into the future anyways. but, more importantly, this gives coach Ron Wilson power to make decisions on who to play or not. before yesterday, this wasn't so... he was stuck with the roster he had.

Giguerre works well with Allaire, don't forget that, and maybe a better influence on Gustavsson. I think the team will miss Hagman and White, though... they were the 'heavy price to pay'... Stajan- I would've dumped him way before Chad Kilger ever left town... and Mayers, I never saw as a fit here... Toskala was unfortunate. He is a much better goalie than he showed here, same with Raycroft, though.

overall a high risk trade that may prove to provide hi rewards immediately... or not. but, definitely improved their situation going forward as guys like Keith Aulie and Dion Phaneuf will probably someday lead the core of D-men alongside Luke Schenn.

and make no bones about it. Phaneuf is a much better pickup than any of Beauchemin , Exelby (soon, on his way out), and Komisarek!

Phaneuf is kind of an all in one of those 3 as he first is tougher than all 3, second he shoots harder than Beauchemin and hits as hard as Exelby or Komisarek plus, he's a bonafide penalty killer. and anything Dion does is much better than Ian White who was the leafs best allround d-man this season.
