As I understand the story the police are thinking he laid a trap for the thief, which can be argued one way or the other. It will be interesting to watch.

chicken masala ? how deadly is that? I really have no idea ... maybe it's some spicy shit...

If I were laying a trap I would have picked cayenne pepper lol

Try the masala in the eyes and let us us know, but don't forget the stick over the head. Not necessarily you SPJ. I'd rather someone more deserving of a good beating.

Why did they not charge the perp for uttering a threat. The fact is, the cops were probably so useless in protecting this guys property he had to take matters into his own hands. Now the cops feel all embarrassed that they have to charge the poor mofo who's property they filed to protect in the first place. What a bunch of losers

If you had read the story closely, the intruder only uttered a death threat (which he should be charged for but it's a case of he said/he said) while the owner used a variety of items to try to stop the guy. That's assault right there.

Being arrested for nothing is no biggy eh?

Why don't you chill out and tone down the anti-cop rhetoric?

He got a call from Mr. Harper's office.

Although Prime Minister Stephen Harper cannot order Polapady’s charges be dropped, the case is apparently on his horizon as his staff called the restaurant owner Thursday to offer the family some moral support.

“I was surprised when I got a call from his office (at 10:30 a.m.),” said Polapady. “We work hard to support our family and I’m glad the Prime Minister Office called. The call was only three, four minutes, but it means a lot.” (The PMO has confirmed a contact was made.)

I think the media gave us just enough sensational info to attract attention to their advertising and it worked. Collateral damage is that every knee and jerk starts spouting 'standfast in self-defence' or 'stupid cops'.

When one of the fighters has to be treated in hospital it's not reasonable to imagine the police aren't gonna charge someone, and they already have a fair bit of evidence to substantiate those injuries, and apparently none for the burglary and alleged thefts. It's now up to the Crown to collect all the facts, and if the charges are dropped well and good. Too bad about the minor lingering consequences of the arrest itself, but you cannot get into a fight with someone and expect you won't suffer. Anyway, the fact that even more media reported the PM's phone-call should mitigate them.

On that note, one hopes Mr. Harper is privy to way more facts than we are, considering how reluctant pols usually are to be seen interfering and meddling with stuff that's sub judice. It wouldn't be nice to discover this guy was another vigilante-wanna-be who set an ambush with a plan to lay a beating on whoever he caught. Let's hope that when the facts do come out and justice is seen to be done that they don't reveal our PM was just another jerk.

Did you even read the story or just the headline?

If a robber came into my house and threatened to kill me unless I gave him the family jewels of course I will defend myself. But, the law states that you cannot simply shoot him down just because he threatened you. In cases of self defense, if an assailant comes at you with only bare knuckles and you bring a knife or gun to the fight then you may be charged.

Are you serious? So say a Robber comes into your house and tells you to give him everything or else he will kill you. You will not defend yourself or feel threatened ? You would not try to defend yourself in whatever way you find fit?
(fearing being charged with assault) ? W o W

If the charge went through, that would give thieves and robbers a rights to take personal properties of others. Camera may deter them, but how often do average Canadian have a camera to guard their properties? We can buy insurance, but the premiums will go through the roof.

It would definitely disrupt the capital system that we currently have.

The thing is, a normal person are not trained under this kind of situation. When you see some guy trying to steal your car, your instinct would be getting whatever weapon you can find to deter the thief.

There is no way a sane person will confront the thief with his bare knuckle, since you don't know what they will pull out from their pocket.

It's not the cop's it the law that is the issue. The case will be thrown out in court.

He threw spicy spice in the guys face, it's a joke.
