The reaction to the shooting of an edgelord YouTuber has been what is so fascinating.
The rush to make it seem like he was an important government official or head of state.
The absolute full-court press of media, pushing other shooting deaths aside and burying other news.
The strong push to silence people, suppress free speech, and use this to get institutions to capitulate and self-censor.
The near-instant "masks-off" by so much of the right, calling for civil war and saying how this now justifies them killing people they disagree with politically.
Now that the shooter isn't demographically convenient and the narrative not strong enough to convince the mushy middle, I suspect it will be memory-holed like Trump's shooter.
It will just be background kindling for the next chance to light the bonfire, remembered as the general "people have shot at conservatives" but not useful enough to be the trigger.

Kirk is pretty replaceable. A college dropout who voiced standard far right bullshit. There are a thousand Kirks out there who could - and would - do exactly the same thing.
