As for watermelon, the only explanation I can think of is that West Africans were the first to cultivate watermelons. Since most American/Canadian slaves are of West African descent perhaps the slave traders noticed they ate watermelon. Well thank goodness they cultivated watermelon because it's the sweetest fruit out there IMO.
