I'm having an argument with someone about this.

But unfortunately, im the lesser one knowledged in car field.

I'm an amateur.

So, help me out. Is he right?

Is it illegal to have lights (neon lights) installed underneath the car? For the sake of enhancing the look of the car (blue, green, pink lights)

The other person says it is...

and I say its not, cos I did see some people with cars that have them.

But I also noticed alot of cars (99%) on the road do NOT have pretty lights underneath, even tho it makes for a gorgeous affect on the car's look. Even though they're insanely easy to install. Yet nobody bothers?

I belive in NY it is. However the police seldom issue tickets unless there is cause for other infractions.

Certain colours of lights are illegal to use on a private car (such as those which are used for emergency or municipal vehicles) however I'm not sure if that applies to lights which are pointed entirely at the ground. I suppose you could just use small fogg lights mounted along side the air deflector and facing down?

It is illegal to have the lights in the underbody, commonly known and ground effects/fx...

BUT it is only illegal to have them turned on while driving... while parked you can have them on.

LOL.

Reminds me of my father who always drove a "klunker". I can remember being embarrassed as a kid when he would drop me off somewhere.

He used to always say; "a man's car is an extension of his penis. I must have a big dick to drive around in that thing, huh?"

It really depends on the state/province. I believe it is perfectly legal in Ontario.

yes
Street Lights is / are the most popular set of lights to be added to the underside of a car. Here is a link to a site with lots of options.

http://www.streetfxseries.com/car-led-lighting.asp

It is perfectly legal to put these lights on. It is NOT legal to have them illuminated while the car is moving or running on a public road. Also many locals restrict the colors permitted also.

Weirdest law is concerning the coloured plate covers. These are sold in Canadian Tire and other car parts stores, but they are illegal. I got ticketed by Peel Regional for having Blue plate covers.

So what does it say about women who "pimp their ride"?

I've seen several females with their own cars at car shows, cruise nights and swap meets. I've seen several young ladies with neon lights under "their" car, and no, not their boyfriend's.

I think this might be because the cameras on the 407 can't pick up the plate with these covers.

That's what I've been told anyway.

Any kind of cover or film over the plate is illegal according to the letter of the law. It's overlooked by the majority of the cops unless they really want to get under your skin. I've had a clear plate cover on one of my bikes for several years, I've kept documentation on every time I've been pulled over along with the officer's badge #. Then one day I got pulled over and was charged with handlebars that exceeded the height and the plate cover.

When I went to court, I provided the factory documentation on the handlebar heights. This was a factory set up, the justice tossed the charge, then came the plate cover and when I said to the justice, I've been pulled over by officers with the following badge numbers, every one of them ignored the plate cover, so what made this cop more of an expert on the plate covers than the other cops. The charge was tossed since it was a clear cover that in no way obstructed the view of the place.

Insofar as the ground effect lights that you see on the underside of a car or motorcycle, its illegal in the province of ontario to have them on while driving the vehicle. It's another law that is ignored by the majority of the police.

I call it selective enforcement, its only enforced by those who want to waste your time.
Yeah. I don't really see the logic of lights UNDERNEATH The car being obstr4uctive to the road. In fact, it might improve conditions on the road. After an extensive ...uh...let's call it a ...discussion..about why they object/banned and consider it illegal is because as a family member putsw it - a person might bedistractedby the "prettiness" or the "appearance" of the car with all the pretty colors and lights.

So, the lights make the car look better, thus, the good looks of the car make it dangerous to the road?

Uh......okay.

So, I guess that makes any good looking car - corvette, stingray, porsche, viper, roadster, motorcycle, harley all illegal! simply cause they look good and can distract people from the road.

Soooo....if excessive lighting on a car makes it a threat to other drivers on the road, then answer me this...why do emergency vehicles, ambulances and firetrucks and police vehicles all have flashing lights on their vehicles that make them really bright? Dont they make the roads more dangerous??

And before you even think..

FYI - I know the argument about lights that are IN YOUR FACE such as headlights and additional straightward lights such as extra headlights i the front of the car that can blind another incoming driver. But the lights UNDERNEATH the car doesn't apply to this.

And Sheik, I like the phrase "selective enforcement. which baiclaly means a cop can come up to someone and if you shake their hand, in a greeting, that's called "Assault" and "selective enforcement" can also mean if you even look at a cop "the wrong way" or however he interprets your looking at him, then he can arrest you for that too! Call it "aggravating a police officer"

Just heard this from soemone a while ago....how he was pulled over and the rule goes,a cop cannot pull you over without "legitmate cause" but when the driver asked him why the cop pulled him over. The cop gave no succificient or olid answer and just kept telling thedriver to"have a nice day" until the driver was permitted to drive off.

I am sure they can dream up a ticket for anything aftermarket but it may not stick when it goes to court. The funny thing is a friend of mine who owns a newish BMW stock got a ticket for improper headlights because they were a blue colour. The officer though they were aftermarket. This charge didn't stick in court but was a pain in the ass. So it may be a legal to have neon lights under your vehicle but it can be a hassle.

Why do you want to luminate road kill anyways

Was this a car question or a traffic law question LOL?

Hmmm..I might just go ahead with the installment. Maybe make a switch to turn it off when its on the road, via when its parked. That can make me "immune" to a police officer's arrest. "Yes, officer. They're installed but I turn them off when I'm on the road. They're just to decorate the parking lot spaces"
