If you do the math, that is 15 years, at the rate of battery capacity increase, batteries will have almost 500% the capacity they have today. By that time 600KW charging rates will be quite common I expect.

How long does it take to charge a battery right now? Filling a tank of gas is maybe 5 minutes.

I got the impression that heavy trucks will still be fuel powered.

Just lip service.

14 years from now, they will just kick the can down the road.
Based on the history of many things, that is as likely an outcome as any. But if they've built new factories and closed down or repurposed older ones, that might not be viable.

Would love to own an electric car. The 0 to 60 is phenomenal with EV's.
They're gonna have to rewire all apartment and condo buildings though.
And people who park their cars in the street in Toronto will also have to figure out a solution, because many dont have garages

Maybe they will finally smarten up and let people charge for charging and parking with an easy app or something like that. Maybe give a little kick back to the city.

Not really. Tesla is working right now on EV trucks that will replace those 18 wheeler Diesels. Because those trucks have bigger platforms their bigger batteries will have a range of 600-800 miles before having to be recharged. No shifting of gears and capable of going 0-60 mph ~5 seconds!

My next vehicle will be an EV. Batteries are only improving and getting better with faster recharging.
Right now KIA is offering EVs with a 10 year vehicle warranty that covers both vehicle and battery!

Internal combustion engines are going the way of the horse & buggy.
EVs, LPG, CNG and upcoming Vehicles with fuel cells are the way of the future.

It's not a coincidence GM's announcing this now with who's in The White House.

GM are welfare bums who should have been allowed to die in the late 2000's instead of governments bailing their ass out.

This is just the new green lie for some more free green.

While I was typing this I see Tesla was mentioned. Elon Musk is another welfare bum.

Trucks are all about useful weight(fuel density). There's no technology available right now to electrify heavy and medium trucks. The batteries are simply too heavy for that application.

More FAKE news and basically BS, coming from the Big OIL lobby, which have been FAR BIGGER welfare bums over the years with all the subsidies, tax relief, etc, they have extorted from government over the years!

Fact is this could have happened way back when Jimmy Carter was POTUS. Pres. Carter started Green Programs that would have freed the USA from oil dependence by moving us to alternative energy sources, only to have it scuttled by BIG OIL who controlled US energy policies back then. Watch for a redux of this as the OIL lobby feels threatened again.

Tesla 18 wheeler EVs make current 18 Wheeler diesels look pre-historic by compassion!

I know recharging times will be decreased but has anybody said what current charging times are? If I drive to Myrtle Beach (1,500 km.) and fill up my current car twice, the actual filling up takes 10-15 minutes. How many stops requiring how much time is required with an EV. How much longer will my trip take?

Driving on a 1,500 km trip for leisure. If people
in the third world all aspire to (and follow) our lifestyle
earth will turn into toast before transition to renewable
energy is complete. You better hope Greta Thunberg
is being pessimistic.

Had Jimmy Carter's energy policy been carried on by his
successors as much as 20--25% of electric power would
have been produced by renewable energy today. North
America is the Saudi Arabia of natural gas. Long range
traveling and transportation can be powered by natural
gas displaced from power generation by sun and wind
power. Transition to renewable energy infrastructure
on a scale sufficient for the entire population to maintain
the same living standard and lifestyle is too late by now.
Traveling by EVs is great but that will be a lifestyle for the affluent
only. A full transition to renewable energy is still possible if
our leaders have the will. But the freedom of driving hundreds
of km will be a thing of the past at least for the peasants. Elites
like Trudeau would still retain the privilege of vacationing in
a private jet though.

Not so.
Right now China has ~1 million EVs on their roads. That number of EVs will only grow by the year in China. They do this to help clean up their polluted air.
Tesla EVs are very popular in China but are pricey.

NIO EVs are just another popular EV choice in China. NIO is considered a super luxury EV and makes Tesla EVs look dated and OLD! Plus NIO costs ~ 50% less than Tesla. NIO solved the long wait on battery charging by swapping batteries when you are low on juice, for FREE! Takes ~3-5 minutes to swap a low battery for a new fully charged battery. China built up an infrastructure to do this. It works well. You can also charge a NIO as others are charged at EV Charge stations or in you garage or at home.

Right now their are ~6000 NIO EVs in the USA in California. Of course Tesla, Detroit and Big Oil want NO more NIO EVs coming to the USA.

Rewire apartments and condos?

They will need to rewire all of Canada.

1. We don't generate enough electricity.

And 2.

Even if we did, the grid is positively creaky and will spontaneously combust if everyone starts plugging in electric cars. Our existing grid can't even handle when we turn on the air conditioners in tje summer. Your average central air unit draws about 15 amps (it has a 20 amp circuit). Electric cars charging draw 70 amps. Recall 2013 and the rain storms we had and how the grid went orbital. Hydro One basically said that its grid dates from the 50's for the most part.

Power grid in North America will have to be entirely
revamped into a network to connect together all of the
renewable and nuclear power stations many of which
to be built in remote locations in the near future. I don't see
any alternative if our society and our industrial infrastructure
are to be weaned off fossil fuel. Copper will be as valuable as
gold sooner or later.
