I wonder how much coming to Toronto had to do with Burke failing here and he maybe succeeding .. It was Burke who god rid of Babcock to hire Caryle when he was with the Ducks
The leafs gm has very little power in the current structure. It would just be another mind to add to Dubas, hunter, shanny.Nice to see new coach but unconventional to hire coach before you hire a GM ..
Anybody who says MLSE won't spend money can put that phrase to rest ..
He ended up in Toronto because they threw $50 million at him. No other reason, if he was serious about winning he would have went to St. Louis which has far more talent than the Leafs. We can finally put the question to bed about where Babcock will sign and the 'experts' can change course and tell us why he did end up here in Toronto.
Pat Burns took over a non playoff team awhile back and got them to the conference Finals ...The upside of Babcock signing
(1) the piss poor attitude in that dressing room just changed, want to see Kessel say no to doing a certain drill or coming into training camp 20lbs over weight.
(2) Brings instant credibility to the leafs.
(3) Maybe now star players will want to come to TO .......perhaps Steven Stamkos.
(4) And the #1 side to signing Babcock.......the Sabers lost another one.
Downside
The #1 and only reason.... he always had teams with GOOD players who knew what it took to win, he never, ever, had to rebuild a team let alone rebuild a team with such underachievers.
Mr Shanahan, thank you for signing Mr Babcock, lets hope that Ballard & Ballard, sorry, Rodgers & Bell, let you fulfill your plan.
Steven Stamkos? Now why would he leave a Stanley Cup contender for years to come to play with a club that is years away from even making the playoffs? The upside of Babcock signing

The run they are will cost .. Players will want more money and you can't keep everyoneSteven Stamkos? Now why would he leave a Stanley Cup contender for years to come to play with a club that is years away from even making the playoffs?
Stamkos will be the first one they keep. The run they are will cost .. Players will want more money and you can't keep everyone
It couldn't have been without the Cliff Fetcher trade that brought Gilmour to Toronto.Pat Burns took over a non playoff team awhile back and got them to the conference Finals ...
No way holland comes here with Shanahan in place. Holland is basically at the same level -- he has a real gm role. Whomever the leafs hire will be a fake gm -- a title without the reaponaibil
Question for Leaf fans .. If your going to dish out 50 million is Badcock your choice ? I like Joel Quenville ... Heck he was in the Leaf family as a assistant coach for St John's Leafs ..It couldn't have been without the Cliff Fetcher trade that brought Gilmour to Toronto.
Every successful coaching era seemed to coexist with a successful GM tenure. The success Babcock had in Detroit would not have been possible without a sound player development/scouting system put in by Ken Holland. He was successful on the international level, again there's no shortage in supply of good players in our system.
I welcome Babcock with open arms, and give Shanahan all the credit he deserves for bringing in one of the best coaches to Toronto. There were a lot of speculations going back a year ago. Shany wanted him all along, stuck to his game plan and got him. His Detroit connection must have helped.
Is Hunter going to be named the GM next ? Very possible. Could Ken Holland be next on the radar ? He's signed till the 2016-17 season, I think; maybe Shanahan has something else up his sleeves.
That's the stupidest quote of the day !Doesn't matter who the coach or GM is if you don't have the talent on the ice you're going nowhere. And the Leafs have little talent at both the NHL and AHL levels.
How can I provide a link that says it's allowed? Rules are prescriptive they don't say what can be done. You said it's not allowed- if you don't know the rule then fine- maybe it's allowed but never been done. Why don't you provide a link that your fantasy proposal is allowed instead.
My observation is based on common sense. The nba has a rule that draft picks can be traded for cash (up to 3 million) and many late firsts and seconds have been sold.
If cash was allowed in NHL trades for picks how come no picks have ever been sold in recent times.
Hay Captain Obvious that's the reason why Babcock was signed...to change the culture....... which results in changing the on ice talent.Doesn't matter who the coach or GM is if you don't have the talent on the ice you're going nowhere. And the Leafs have little talent at both the NHL and AHL levels.
Amen!It couldn't have been without the Cliff Fetcher trade that brought Gilmour to Toronto.
