I just been watching a few of Michael Caine's movies:

Alfie - disturbing, depressing movie. 7/10

Educating Rita - excellent movie, Julie Waters is superb in her role as Rita - 9/10

Cider House Rules - the book was better, but this movie was still very good. Excellent essay on abortion. 9/10

Next Up:

Children of Men

Harry Brown

The Italian Job

Have you movie buffs have any other suggestions to add? I know he made a few stinkers, so I'm not really willing to watch everything he did, but if you know of some good choices, I'd be glad to try them.

My favorite has got to be "The Man Who Would Be King". Love his closing scene with Christopher Plummer.

The Italian Job

There are TWO versions of this story, 1969 and 2003.

The 2003 film is NOT a Michael Caine movies. It stars Donald Sutherland, Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Chalize Theron.
I just finished watching this one, hoping to see Charlize naked, but no such luck.

So, now onward to the 1969 version.

Well, I just finished watching The Italian Job, 1969 version. I had seen it years ago. Back then I guess it was entertaining, but today, i found it to be pretty bad. Poor dialogue, bad music, improbable story. The only things I liked about it, were there were lots of good views of Italian architecture and highways, lots of car crashes. I'll never watch it again.

The Man Who Would Be King - 1975 - Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer, and Caine's wife, Shakira Caine. |

This is a good film....highlights the Raj era in India, the discipline of the British soldier, and the conflict between the people's religion and the power of the priests. Filmed mostly in Morocco.

Thanks rafterman... a good choice

jcpro, I'm not sure about Austin Powers... I've never seen any of the films and my first reaction to the trailers has been that I NEVER want to see them. BUT, in light of your suggestion and their huge popularity, I am gonna try one. If I like it, I'll admit I was wrong. if I hate it, you're off my xmas card list. :)

I would give it a solid 7. It is dated, but I like that it is dated. In hidef it is almost worth it for the classic cars alone.

Two you may want to try are sleuth and dressed to kill. The latter is pretty standard de palma stuff.

I think Michael Caine was famous for never turning down anything, quite unapologetically. He made a lot of crap, but a lot of great stuff.
I do think Harry Brown is an enjoyable recent movie though.

I recently watched Harry Brown. Michael Caine as Charles Bronson and he pulls it off.

But to see Michael Caine at his very best you have to watch Sleuth (1972).
