I think that Vlady is at his highest value the Blue Jays will ever see. Which is why I would trade him now.

* He has made it clear that he wants to try free agency. Jays return = 2025 season. One season and he is gone (That one season could be a good one though...)
* The distraction around him and the team will be a pain in the ass for all the players, especially if they know he wants to leave.
* In reality do the Jays have much of a chance this year, even to make the play-offs?
* So many big time contracts come with such a short term return. Is it worth it to be saddled with years of salary costs when a player is well past their prime?
* May be worth getting some young proven, or very promising talent/prospects in exchange for Vlady.

As much as Vlady is a nice, fun and productive ball player now - I really do not see him being an effective top/elite player after 2 - 3 years.

I hope I am wrong as I do like him as an athlete.

Just looking at the situation from a business perspective.
Here's another perspective.

The Jays have publicly stated that they feel that this year's team is good enough to get to the playoffs and possibly beyond. If they trade him now, they are admitting that they are not serious about contending this year. They would be giving up. They will get nobody in return that will help them this year as much as Vladdy can. They will get prospects and draft pics which will help them down the road, but not in 2025.

They would be telling the fans that they're giving up on 2025 so why should the fans have any interest in showing up or watching. If they are not in the heat of the race come draft deadline, they can trade him then for some future and if they are in the hunt they will be forced to keep him all season and lose him for nothing. That is why I believe that it is impossible to trade him now, even though the reality is that they would get their highest return.

I was born before 1977----LMAO Like I said in the other Jays thread, I was even at the Jays franchise opening day game on April 7/1977, at the old exhibition stadium.
I saw that game on TV, (no high school that day).

I was at opening day for the Expos - Cardinals in 1970. A guy sitting two rows in front of me was looking at the field with his binoculars, then he unscrewed one of the lenses, and took a drink.

Back in the day, there was always a cloud over the press box at Jerry Park, (at the top of the grandstand behind home plate).

the cloud was cigarette smoke from the sports reporters typing their stories during the game. Sometimes the next day's headline in sports would be "Spos cling to one run lead in 7th", because the morning edition was printed before the game was over.

Seats in "Jonesville", the left field bleachers, cost fifty cents for kids twelve and under until at least 1971, and possibly longer. Many of the 1970 Expos were being paid $10K, if they were in the Majors for the whole season.

Sooo....

$500mil over 14 years is the deal.

As I've said before, that's not much for Vladdy as he would've gotten more on the open market.

Does anyone here think Vladdy has 14 more seasons left in him? Not even close. My max offer would have been $40 million x 10 the Jays caved. This front office is just horrible.

If the new Collective Bargaining Agreement after this season includes a hard salary cap, this could be really bad, for a long time. Perhaps the cockfighting playoffs are held in October in the Dominican.

DUDE UR CLUELESS, MLB IS BETTER WITHOUT A SALARY CAP, IF YOUR TEAM MAKES MONEY AND YOUR OWNERS INVEST IN THE PRODUCT, THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO ENJOY AND SPEND WHATEVER THEY WANT.

I hate caps on any market but professional sports salaries have become exorbitant and the fans pay the price. These teams make a lot of their money through network TV contracts. There is no way an ESPN is paying the Pittsburgh Pirates even close to what they would pay the Yankees or the Dodgers. No matter how good the team is. Therefore as I see it, the only way to restore some competitive balance in the league is to implement a salary cap and a salary floor.

Let us say he plays the next 14 years.........How many championships can we expect? I would bet none. And it won't be long before more people catch on to the one fact........he is not that good. Nothing in playoffs if they even make them, nothing in the clutch

Salary caps present the best way to keep teams on a level playing field. The skill level of the owners and general managers is what makes the difference. That is why the NFL and NHL are so entertaining from a fans perspective.

Network TV deals for League rights are split evenly for all teams. Local cable deals are all negotiated individually.

This is 2023 data, for all team revenue:

It's very likely that the LA Dodgers currently receive the most television income, when Japanese broadcast rights are included.

The revenue chart above is why I often refer to the Blue Jays as a 'Small Market Team'.

What makes Baseball different is the number of home dates and the home attendance, compared to stadium capacity. NFL teams are blacked out in their home market if home games aren't sold out 72 hours prior to kickoff. 5,000 empty seats at an NBA game prompts relocation rumours, but it's a reason to celebrate for most MLB teams.
