I admit it is quite possible that palms were greased behind the scenes in selling off the 407 but I would take my chances with that than having lefties running the show with their inability to manage anything larger than a lemonade stand [e.g. hot dog carts are too tough for them to figure out].

With respect to your entertaining attempt at valuing the 407, I started to think about explaining the concept of present value of money to you and how you can't simply [that is not a shot at your thought process by the way] arithmatically total up 100 years worth of potential future cash flows to arrive at a current value right now. However, I'm sure the time share guys got you with that spiel: 'look how much you will save over the next 50 years' and I don't have time to tutor you on finances.

We need guys like Ford and Harris to come in and clean up after the lefties have made a mess of everything. All politicians will look after their supporters to some degree but I trust Ford a lot more than Miller kissing the ass of every union member that might vote for him. At least Ford's potential beneficiaries will have worked for the possible payoff as opposed to blood-sucking unions getting rich off our tax dollars.

In any case, I know the mediocre prefer socialism and no-one bettering themselves. How are your buddies in the USSR, Cuba, North Korea, etc. doing?

Let's hope Ford does as good a job as Harris did; we need it.

No-one cares about this made up scandal. People see it is Miller's lapdog yapping at Ford trying to slow him down.

As far as corruption at City Hall, surely you have seen what has been going on for the last eight years? Just how far up your a$$ do yoiu have your head buried?

Good point. Unfortunately voter sentiment does tend to swing from one extreme to the other sometimes, doesn't it?

However, I'd rather have a Ford than a Rae: business-minded and practical rather than socialist and idealistic. In the end they all mess up and prevaricate but I will always go for the capitalist who takes less of my money and lets me do better for myself rather than the over-taxing and meddling socialist.

Just my preference. We will have to wait and see how it plays out.

Donations for a non profit sports organization for underprivildge kids, using letterhead he paid for, and stamps he bought.... I will in fact take that over using tax payer money to fund my going away party, french lessons , or sponsoring kids teams.

Or for that matter blowing 1 billion on program with zero results that they could have bought installed from an Ontario company for 25 million , hardware included

When the right wingers get in power they sell off bits to their friends to make money off. So their friends, who donated to their party, get rich. Then they lower the taxes on the rich and corporations so they get richer. And when they mess up, their rich friends get richer.

When the left wingers get in power maybe the unions do better, but basically the middle class ends up better. They provide more services, tax corporations and the rich more. So maybe the garbagemen end up doing ok, but at least they're not making millionaires multi-millionaires.

It comes down to this. If you're in the top 10% of the income bracket, vote right wing and you will be better off. All else, vote left wing and you'll do better. And you're a sucker if you think voting right wing will make your middle class ass better off.

Nice class struggle poppycock except reality proves that things don't improve for the middle class: do you really think things are better under Miller? Come on, you can say it with a straight face, can't you?

The problem is the right wingers have to come in and fix the mess from the socialists and they are the bad cops but some people don't see that. They love their socialists who have money for everyone but then they are all suprised when the bill comes due and nobody can pay. If you love it so much, then those success stories abroad await you: Cuba, USSR, North Korea, etc..

Myself, I prefer to stand on my own two feet and earn what I deserve without overtaxing socialists deeming it too much and taking more than what is fair. The weak and mediocre prefer the state to support them and baby them so you vote as you see fit.

By the way, my little Marxist friend, it is the corporations that provide the revenue that drives our society so the socialist dead beat types can sponge off the industrious. It is the coporations that succeed that let your union buddies' pensions flourish so they can be compensated so outlandishly for what they do when they work.

Are we done with this thread yet? It didn't really go anywhere, much like ford. A lot of talk, nothing gained and all that was wasted was a lot of hot air.

I bought thousands of dollars of pot from him in the 90's. So I guess he is a member of the Doobie Bros. What people should remember is that running a city is not like running a business. A city isn't a business. its a city, two very different things. Rob Ford has no REAL business experience aside from selling pot to the stoners of etobicoke. The family decal business doesn't count because His brother Doug runs everything.

I am still supporting Sarah Thomson. Yes, she may be green in politics but she comes from a real business background and can bring fresh thinking to city hall. I completely disagree that she should have run for city councillor first. I don't think it was ever her intention to make a career out of politics. She was/is simply a concerned citizen fed up with the 'leadership' at city hall.

In particular, current TTC plans to expand the LRT are a pain in the b*tt to say the least -- and not in a good way! HAVE YOU BEEN ON ST CLAIR ever since the LRT construction finally finished?? (5 years later and how many millions of $$$ over budget??) Traffic there is a horrible mess. Many long-running local businesses had to close due to the construction mess, and clientele is not coming back as you may expect. Miss one of the few available parking spots and get slapped with a $60 ticket, no kiddin'!

Do you really want LRT on Eglinton?? Sheppard?? Finch?? Toronto is not Amsterdam or a Euro capital. We have larger distances + TO population is growing exponentially (ok maybe I'm exaggerating a bit re: exponentially) due to immigration. Anyway, we need subways not outdated streetcars!

Sarah's main platform item is expanding our subway system. Everybody wants it and is talking about it, incl. the other candidates, however she's the only one who's articulated a plan as to how to make it happen $$$-wise.

Yes, road tolls are part of the solution. I really don't understand why people are b*tching about this one. Many American cities have them, and I do believe it will encourage car-pooling and less cars on the roads --> de-congest traffic AND help the environment. Not to mention being a source of funding our subway system -- I don't think TO residents want further increased property & vehicle taxes instead, do we???
I wasn't aware of provincial approval req'd for road tolls -- yes this could delay implementation but let's not just flat-out be opposed to the idea w/o considering both pluses & minuses.

Again, I still believe Sarah is on the right track and has real & reasonable solutions for our city.

Go Sarah go!!

the issue of the road tolls is that the roads have already been paid for out of general revenue, there are gas taxes of which toronto gets a slice that should have been dedicated to road/infrastructure maintenance and improvements. People really don't want to pay for those things twice, because levels of gevernment can not live within their means. Regardless of which level of government is doing it the taxes all come out of the same pocket.

Most of the toll roads in the states are interstate highways there are reasonable alternatives, in Toronto there really are no reasonable altenatives to the DVP or the GArdiner .

A huge bunch of money can be found in the city budget simple by making sure projects run on time and on budget, this council seems incapable of that, you mention St Clair, Bloor and Avenue Rd is another example, the latest little spending spree by executive council last week is another . Lets fix the probolem before we add more money to the pot , that will only encourage them

Rob Ford's lead in the Toronto mayoral race is growing, according to an exclusive new poll, but more than half of those polled said they fear for the future of the city regardless of who ends up with the job.

The poll conducted by Ipsos Reid, for Global News, Newstalk1010 and the National Post, shows that despite recent controversies, Rob Ford is the frontrunner in the Toronto mayoral race with 32 per cent of the vote.

Former Deputy Premier George Smitherman was second with 21 per cent, while Sarah Thomson (10%), Joe Pantalone (9%) and Rocco Rossi (7%) are well off the pace.

More than one in five (21%) said they were still undecided

According to some tweets from the Globe's city hall person, there have been some shakeups in the other campaigns.

Rossi has apparently brought in a new campaign manager, and Smitherman has brought in a former staffer from Queen's Park (who is now a lobbyist) to help with communications.
